The Mormon settlers were angry about being forced out of Nauvoo and so they decided to move westward into what is now Texas. They named their new town after one of their beliefs, Alma (or "The Elder"). Little Elm quickly became a popular trading center for the area because it was close to markets in Austin and Dallas. It also had good transportation connections thanks to the Goodlands Railroad. In 1839, the first school in Little Elm opened up and taught children between the ages of five and twelve. In 1840, a post office was established at Little Elm and soon there were also houses being built here. In 1845, a store was built on Commerce Street in Little Elm by John Denton. Over time, other stores followed suit until all of Little Elm had its own store building by 1850. Little Elm is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in Collin County. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and is the most populous municipality within that area by population. Little Elm has been home to a number of early settlers and businesses, including Baylor College of Medicine, which was founded here in 1871 as a medical school; Texas Instruments; and Dow Chemical Company.
