In 1945, the United States Marine Corps used Little Elm as one of its training bases during World War II. The land that now makes up Little Elm was first settled by Germans in the 1840s and 1850s. An early settler, Heinrich von Kleist, named his farm “Emmal” after his birthplace in Germany. Kleist came to Texas in 1853 with his wife and three children and began to farm near present-day McKinney. He later moved to what is now Little Elm and founded what is now Kleist & Co., an insurance company that still exists today. In 1879, Dutch farmers James Lyden and Jacobus van der Velde bought 600 acres (240 hectares) of land west of downtown Little Elm for $1 per acre ($27 per hectare). This area would become known as the Van der Velde Farmlands because these two men were responsible for its cultivation and development. The first store in Little Elm opened on Main Street on October 17, 1881 by J P Hennigan Jr., who was then just 26 years old. By 1895, there were 12 stores open in little elm! The first post office opened on December 1st, 1886 by John A Cooksey Sr.. There were also several schools at this time: Presbyterian School (1887), Methodist School (1889), First Baptist Church (1890), Union Academy (1892). The coming years saw increased business activity in Little Elm due to the spread of railroadation across Texas. Businesses such asJudge Wirtz’s grocery store (187019) helped spur support for local businesses while also providing necessary infrastructure such as roads and water systems needed for rapid growth like this new industry did not have at that time! On January 15th 1903 KW Slaughter cofounded Slaughter Brothers Meat Market which remains one of the most active small businesses inLittle Elm to this day! One major event that occurred during this time period was World War I which caused significant economic impact on both Big Bend Rancho Seco east of Fort Worth and northward into Waller County.$2 million worth of wheat crops went down due to lack Of rain; causing prices for flour skyrocketing from $0-$4/bushel! After WWI ended came prohibition which caused many farms throughout TXto close their doors; including those within range of Fort Worth(Big Bend Rancho Seco)! Farmers turned to hay production instead due To abundancy Of good quality Red Grass Hay available free From ranches nearby! Thereafter agricultural production dwindled significantly leading to large numbersOf squatters living around little elm over ensuing decades-see attached map depicting current zoning adjacent properties zoned CDP
