Little Elm, Texas is a small town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,921 as of the 2010 census. It is located in the southern part of Webb County and is included in the Tyler metropolitan area. Little Elm began as a sawmill town on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1881, pioneer James Birdseye bought 9 acres (3 ha) of land at what is now Little Elm for $10 per acre ($100 per hectare). He named his new community Birdseye after himself and erected a log cabin to serve as its first courthouse. In 1883, he built a second log courthouse on what are now Main and Commerce Streets. The townsite had been founded by settlers who were drawn to the site because it wasadjacent to two major rivers—the Arkansas River and Buffalo Bayou—and there were ample forests nearby for lumbering. In 1912, Lumberman John Withers opened his own sawmill within walking distance of Birdseye's original mill complex. That same year, Withers donated 1/2 acre (0.24 ha) of land at what is now Fourth Street and Prairie Road to make room for a schoolhouse and other civic buildings that would become central inbirdseyeye's town." By 1916, all but one ofWithers' mills had closed due to competition from bigger mills outside of Texarkana or Dallas; however, Williams-Sonoma reopenedoneofWithers'millsin1923." The post-World War II boom time for Little Elm was defined by two factors: 38% growth in retail sales during 1957–1975 (adjusted annually since then), followed by 24% growth in employment from 1978 through 2000—"a period when few Midwestern towns achieved such skyrocketing levels" according to city historian Dianne Krieger; "Such growth almost always reflects waves of transplants from larger cities looking for opportunities near Interstate 10". According to Krieger: "Many people [who live near] I-10 eventually became denizens [of Little Elm], especially young families with children attending local schools", which ledto increased military presence downtown during wartime due to air defense missile testing conducted adjacent thereto." Accordingly, post-war development has focused on restoring historic architecture while creating new businesses including health food stores (most notably Bob Evans Farms), arts & crafts boutiques (including Tanglewood Fine Arts), antiques dealerships/,and large box stores (). As recently as 1990 most storefront businesses were occupied only by family members running their parents'/grandparents'/aunts'/uncles'/etc.'s businesses.; however these days nearly every business along 4th Street attracts vehicular traffic on weekdays from morning until eveninganglersfishingfromArkansasRiverbanksoutsideofthetown Limits." The restored Downtown Historic District has also seen increased commercial development with several high end restaurants opening up over the past decade or so like Benaroya steak house(renamed Benaroya Mexican Grill) accompainedbylive music nightly inside/outside Ann Taylor Loft store across Third Street—-a phenomena unique among Uptown Memphis neighborhoods where live music typically takes place outdoors between venuesduringvercharlie daytime hours
