Little Elm is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. It was founded by colonists in 1836. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. Little Elm is the namesake of Little Elm Baptist Church and its Presbytery. The original settlers in Little Elm were Methodist missionaries who came from Tennessee and Alabama to evangelize the area around Houston. When they arrived, they built a log cabin on the edge of what is now City Park. A few years later, they started a churches in what is now downtown Little Elm and started sending people west to proselytize as well. In 1839, they decided to move their church westward to what is now known as East First Street (just east of I-610). They named their new church after themselves—Little Elm Baptist Church. In 1850, General Sam Houston crossed into Texas on his way to fight Mexico and founded Huntsville with his fellow Texans. When he got there, he found that some farmers had opened up land near where he lived so he began buying it back from them and naming it after himself: Huntsville Heights Rancho de las Pulgas y el río Montaño (Homesite of Live Oaks and Mount Carmel River Ranch). He also started building homes here—the first being called The Woodhouse—which still stands today on East First Street near I-610. Eventually, other Texan leaders bought out General Sam Houston's share of the land and formed the Republic of Texas in 1845 with only Austin as its capital city. Like General Sam Houston before him, San Jacinto Parish president James Kenedy wanted to name his parish after himself but wasn't able to find anyone else with that name living anywhere within reach—so he settled for Little Elm instead! In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Worth during the American Civil War (and most notably killed Lt.-Gov.) John Fenton OwenMORE than 120 brave Texans died defending this Union stronghold against an estimated 3200 Confederate troops under Lt.-Gen.(General) Braxton Bragg; these days you can still see battlements surrounding Fort Worth’s old city limits! But back then it was just another little townfolk like you & me trying our best not get massacred! Despite all this history & mayhem going on right outside our door (& everyday), we continue To Play “Rocky” by choice! LOL
