Little Elm, Texas is a small town located in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The population was 5,849 at the 2000 census. The name "Little Elm" comes from an old German settlement that was near what is now Little Elm Creek. In 1847, Andrew Johnson, then President of the United States, sent General Sam Houston's forces to quash a cattleraid in this area. As a result of the battle and subsequent lawless conditions in the region, Old Dutch Fort became home to some of Texas' earliest settlers. In 1872 Little Elm was one of 10 towns selected by President Ulysses S. Grant for inclusion in the new Dallas County seat controversy. Despite persistent pushback from remaining residents (including future Mayor James Meeks), on July 1, 1872 Little Elm became part ofDallas County as part of a larger land grant given to Edwin Mims and other pioneers who had settled in Dallas County during the earlier years of Manifest Destiny. The cotton gin industry centered around Little Elm began to decline after World War II; however it has since regained some activity with spin-off companies such as Dillard's Department Store and Home Depot having built stores there over time. The economy has been primarily based on services such as education and social services since its establishment; however there have been recent efforts by businesses to bring jobs back into town through projects such as construction or marketing initiatives
