In 1990s developers revitalized much of downtown with new construction including a shopping mall and movie theater complex called "The Starlite". In 1916, Edwin Hite founded Hite Elevator Company which manufactured railroad cars and trucks! This location would become home to many local businesses including First American Financial Corporation (F AFC), Tootsie Roll Enterprises (TRE), Mastercard America Inc., ExxonMobil Corporation and more! grocery stores such as Safeway Outlet Stores (SWARO), Kroger Food Markets (KROG), WEBtv Networks - popular current day streaming services - anchored this growth corridor for decades until recently when discount retailer Walmart took over anchor locations throughout much of suburban Harris County ! In 2000-2001 rapid annexation by neighboring cities led to an influx of people & development first seen around Interstate 10 eastbound & IH10 southbound !! Many homes were bought & developed without regard to historical value or infrastructure needs due simply to physical proximity !! Today you can walk down any street within 5 minutes' radius and find examples ofhistoric structures such as churches/synagogues /temples / schools / factory buildings all newly renovated or rebuilt !! It truly has become a "blend" type community where everyone knows each other so there are no " separations" ++ The following year saw another large influx of people with construction starting on major new highways that ran through town center including Loop 610 West & Beltway coffee shops replacing strip malls that were extensively damaged by Hurricane Katrina !!
