The Lewisville Gun Club is one of the oldest gun clubs in Texas. It formed on October 25, 1881, in Lewisville. The club has been meeting regularly since then and still meets today. The LGC currently has over 100 members and they meet monthly to discuss current events with firearms and safety topics. In 1886, the Lewisville Gun Club was the first to have a shooting gallery in Texas. That year was also when the LGC began selling guns commercially. In 1889, the Lewisville Gun Club organized its first rifle competition which drew participants from all over Texas. From 1890-1918, the LGC held annual rifle matches that were major competitions in Texas. In 1902, Colonel George Wirtz donated land for a gun range in Lewisville which became known as “Wirtz Park” today. At this location, members could shoot rifles and shotguns for practice or competition purposes. In 1916-1917, the LGC hosted its first international match where it competed against other clubs from around the world. In 1930-1931, president of Colt Firearms Corporation Don Charles donated an additional 20 acres to increase gun range facilities in Lewisville by 100%. Today’s property includes both an outdoor range capable of seating up to 550 people andims as well as a indoor training room that can seat up to 50 people at a time for firearms training exercises etc... In 1934-1935 (the same year that Colt Firearms Corporation closed theirLewisville plant), local citizens banded together to form a committee called “The Citizen's Committee on Crime Prevention” who worked tirelessly on developing public education programs on firearm safety issues and creating regulations governing handguns sales within our city limits... The Citizens Committee successfully lobbied for passage of state handgun legislation which increased restrictions on handgun ownership within our city limits... After years of hard work by these dedicated individuals,Lewisville finally received its own ordinance regulating handgun sales & possession within city limits effective January 1st 1938!
