Lewisville is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,882 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area. It is named for General John Lewis of the Union army who was wounded at the Battle of Antietam and died six days later. Lewisville began as a small post office called "Pine Gap" on March 12, 1881. The name was changed to "Lewisville" on February 3, 1886. The post office closed on December 31, 1902. The town first appeared in public records in 1882 when government surveyor John Ahern surveyed the land that would eventually become Lewisville. Ahern named his new community after General John Lewis who had been wounded at the battle of Antietam and died six days later. In 1907, Congress passed an act entitled "An Act To Establish a National Cemetery for Veterans of Foreign Wars", which designated land near FM 620 east of town as the national cemetery for veterans of foreign wars serving in American forces during World War I and World War II (the "First World War National Cemetery"). The cemetery opened on November 1, 1914 (see below). In 1920, when FM 620 realigned itself through Tarrant County so that it ran north-south instead of east-west as it does now, part of what had once been Route 281 became Boulevard G from Lewisville northeast to Arlington Heights; this portion is now known as Loop 610 East between Interstate 10 and US 41 while Boulevard H remains concurrent with FM 620 south to replace Loop 610 East's former routing east to Arlington Heights southeast along then southbound US 41 until its junction with Interstate 10 just south of Farmers Branch in Dallas).
