These barrels had a Socketed breech block which allowed them to explode when fired, providing a devastating impact on enemy combatants. This method of firing became known as “rifle fire by means of ball and socket”. One reason why rifle barrels have remained popular throughout history is their durability; they are not affected by most common firearm malfunctions such as misfire or overpressure. Rifle barrels can also hold more rounds than handgun barrels because they are wider at the base and have a greater circumference at the muzzle end compared to handgun barrels which have a narrower base and smaller circumference at the muzzle end
