Lewisville, Texas is a city in Kaufman County, Texas, United States. The population was 20,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kaufman County. Lewisville was founded in 1871 by Captain John Hogg and his family. The first post office in Lewisville was established in 1875. In 1893, Captain Hogg donated land to build a new courthouse and town site; today's Lewisville began as the only town in Kaufman County. The first firearms laws were passed in Texas on October 3rd, 1892 when Governor James Polk signed into law "An Act To Regulate Firearms In Texas." This act required all citizens 21 years of age or older to have a license to purchase or possess any firearm other than shotguns and pistols with barrels less than eighteen inches (45 cm). muzzleloaders were also exempted from this rule. On November 5th, 1896, Captain John Hogg organized an annual rifle competition at what is now known as the "Hogg Rifle Range" which still takes place today. The event would later be renamed the Lewisville Pistol Competition in memory of Captain John Hogg and his wife Alice who died suddenly while attending that year's event. On January 4th 1907Captain Hogg organized a golf tournament at what is now known as Battlefield Park which would become one of the most popular events held in Lewisville each year until it was discontinued after World War II due to military requirements for firearm clothing
