Lewisville was founded on December 12, 1879 by John Ladd and his family as a farmstead near the junction of the Canadian and Williamson rivers. The Ladds were pioneer farmers who developed a ranching business that included raising cattle and horses. In 1899 the Ladds sold their ranch to General Sam Houston for $10,000. The first store in Lewisville was opened in 1902 by Fannie Burden and her husband J. C. Burden. At this time Lewisville had only one schoolhouse which served grades 1-8. By 1913 Lewisville had 10 churches with residents worshipping at 8 different denominations including Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Episcopal/Anglican and Lutheran services; 2 post office buildings (1 built 1892); 5 businesses (2 groceries; 3 dry goods; 2 banking firms; 1 mercantile firm); 3 residences (2 frame homes; 1 brick home). In 1917 two new schools were added to the school system when the Waco School District merged with Hudspeth County Schools to form Austin Independent School District #4. In 1923 Lewisville had its first professional baseball team when the club was formed from parts of the local high school teams which played in the Lone Star League but disbanded after one season due to financial difficulties In 1951 an act of Congress designated Hudspeth County as land available for oil exploration so development began quickly around Lewisville with several large drilling rigs operating out of town during that decade The early years of rapid growth were marked by social unrestrained by regulation or caution as many men seeking opportunity took advantage of cheap labor available in what became known as "the Wild West." With no law enforcement present to monitor exploitation or protect citizens these days it is difficult to know exactly how things unfolded during these years but some patterns did emerge which are still evident today: drunkenness was rampant before organized police response arrived while Human Resources Management practices were highly lax creating conditions ripe for human error or racketeering An early example occurred when a group of young men prospected for oil near town without any proper equipment except walking boots and pistols - they were arrested on suspicion of looting an unguarded mine In later years similar violations would occur oftenentimes involving children who sought excitement or money above anything else while adults indulged in criminal behavior
