In 1921, the company acquired Humphreys Brothers Optics Corporation of Torrance, California and began producing large Schmidt telescopes. In 1928, the company introduced its first 4-meter telescope and continued production until 1969 when it produced its last Schmidt telescope.

The first settlement in what is now Levelland was made by pioneer parents named John and Sarah Goode on November 1, 1836. They built a log cabin on a Prairie Creek bend in present day Randall County. In 1839, brothers David and Levi Goode founded Grimes Ferry Road which ran along the banks of the Trinity River through present day Grimes County and served as a transportation corridor for cattle drives from Mexican territory west to East Texas. TheGoodes also developed a mill here that produced flour, soapstone and other products until it closed in 1906. The early residents were farmers who grew wheat, corn, cotton, oats and other crops near their homes or sold them to others for processing into items like flour or hardware. By 1860 there were over 150 families living in Levelland with an estimated total value of $30 million according to one estimate from 1895. Farming stopped during the Civil War because many people enlisted or left to fight (much like today). Thereafter farming resumed but output decreased due to technological advances such as improved irrigation systems and new breeds of livestock better suited for Midwestern agriculture such as cows that could be milked by hand rather than being driven into confinement barns where they died from disease or heat exhaustion during long drives across open country

When this failed, Prairie View tried again with Mexican workers but this time no one came because there were no fields suitable for agriculture in Texas then or even now. In 1867, Jeptha Meeks started a store here named Emporium which became the nucleus around which other businesses grew: hardware stores (Draper & Sons), groceries (Foley Bros.), telephones (General Electric Co.), dry goods stores (National Cash Store), and finally banks (The First National Bank). By 1880 Levelland had 30 residents and two churches: First Baptist Church and Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1911-1912 James Fenton developed an oil well near present day Main Street and Holcombe Road east of town; he named it Fenton Field after himself and his father-in-law who had helped him drill the well throughout 1910-1911 including during Houston's college yearbook campaign that year! That same year also saw construction on what would eventually become Sallie Mae Lane - one of Richland County's most famous streets - when Mrs A C Pritchett donated her lot to townspeople for $1 million! Homebuilders soon began building neighborhoods on large lots surrounding Fenton Field with homes starting at $25,000; these days many are still standing testament to not only Mr. Fenton's pioneering efforts but also all that followed since those initialConstruction boom! This period saw heavy growth for both Levelland proper as well as neighboring towns such as Prairie View which experienced rapid expansion due largely to farming industry growth northward along IH 10 corridor
