The university became one of four public universities established by Acts of Congress passed during Reconstruction to provide education to African Americans living in America following the Civil War and Reconstruction period; Texas A&M being the first such institution established statewide. In 1913 Prairie View A&M was given its current name: Texas Southern University (TSU). Lone Star College opened its doors here on December 6th 1923 with classes starting Fall semester curriculums at Morehead Hall on December 9th 1923 Classes were offered at John Denton Hall until 1962 when enrollment moved to main campus due To overpopulation on main campus Main Campus became too large for Lone Star College and leased back to TSU until 1978 When Lone Star College closed their doors this left TSU without a college entrance or undergraduate program leading to many students having difficulty finding employment outside of TXSOU

The population of Levelland peaked at about 200 residents during the 1930s; however, by the 1940s it had fallen to just 10 residents. By 1950, only 2 residences remained standing and all other buildings were destroyed by fire. Today there are no remnants of Levelland remaining except for one building that still stands vacant and unused for years on end
