Levelland is a town in Lavaca County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of what is now Levelland were Native Americans who hunted and collected game along the Brazos River valley. A post office called "Lavaca" was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1883, James Waggoner built a mill on the banks of the Brazos River and named it after himself - Lubbock cattle were then being exported from this area to markets around the world. In 1888, Hosea Mclntyre set up a school in Lavaca Township which he directed until his death in 1886. In 1907, Harry Bickers opened a general store and post office at 5th Street and I-35W where he continued to operate until his death in 1966. Two years later, Jethro Tatum platted what is now Levelland on land that he had purchased from Harry Bickers. He named it after his father – John Tatum - who had also platted what is now Levelland back in 1907. The town began to take form as early as 1909 when several small businesses joined forces to form the Lavaca Improvement Association (LIA). This group goal was to promote development within Lavaca Township by creating public works projects such as improved roads and bridges, drains systems for agricultural fields, schools and other municipal needs that could be met through private investment only if approved by an association vote among its members at their monthly meetings In 1915 local citizens erected a new courthouse which replaced an earlier structure destroyed during World War I In 1922 residents petitioned the state legislature for creation of a township government with voting rights for all residents over 21 years old instead of just those residing within Lavaca Township After much discussion by both Houses of the State Legislature no action took place until 1938 when voters ratified ordinance No 1226 providing for creation of Levelland Township . On July 1st 1938 township trustees met at John Foust's home located at 901 Polk Street to approve platting out boundaries for township’s 0 square miles with voting privileges limited to male shareholders owning farms or other large landed estates having more than $2 per acre taxability

The town was founded in 1881 by John Witherspoon and his family. Witherspoon named it after Ebenezer Levelland, an American pioneer who had settled in what is now Amarillo in 1836. In 1907, the town became a city under the name of Amarillo. The current school district was formed in 1939 when the old Amarillo Consolidated School District merged with other local districts to form the Amarillo Public Schools System. The original buildings were built on land that currently contains Levelland High School and Parkland Elementary Schools as well as two churches and one community center.
