The name "Levelland" comes from an early pioneer settler, George Leland, who named a creek that flows through the town after himself. In 1906, Levelland became the seat of Tarrant County when it was created from parts of Dallas and influence of Tyler county which had until then been part of Kaufman County. In 1916, Judge James Fenton established a court building on what is now Main Street (now Old Hwy 121), which served as the courthouse until 1949 when new courthouse construction began on Main Street near present-day Interstate 10 (I-10) and Richards Road (now Elmendorf Rd). The building continued to be used as a court house until it was destroyed by fire in 1978; however, some remnants still survive today on East First Street across from Pee Dee's Restaurant & Lounge. The first post office in Levelland opened in 1882; however, no mail ever arrived there because no postal service operated at that time between Dallas and Fort Worth. Early settlers brought with them horses for transportation to market so horses are still seen occasionally being ridden around town today on rural roads close to where they were originally milked for their meat or hay gardens or pasturelands during those days before motor vehicles came into widespread use throughout much of North America during the late 19th century and into the 20th century!
