Levelland is a town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,917 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Bastrop County. Levelland is located in the central area of Bastrop County and it is bordered by Bastrop to the east, Pike County to the north, and Grimes County to the south. The name "Levelland" likely comes from an earlier Indian settlement called "Lembold." The first white settlers arrived in 1836 and named their land "Peoria." A post office was established in 1840 at what is now Levelland, but no town grew up around it until 1881 when a group of farmers bought land east of present-day Levelland on which they built a two-story log courthouse. The small community quickly grew into a busy agricultural center with four large farms that produced crops such as cotton, corn, soybeans, hay, oats and other vegetables. In 1907 oil was discovered on adjoining property which led to increased production of crops and more housing development. By 1945 there were over 100 residences and businesses including banks, churches and stores. In 1957 a new high school opened in Levelland after years of planning by local officials and volunteers working with Interstate 10 through the area. That same year also saw the opening of Western Baptist Church which remains one of Levelland's most popular tourist destinations today. Today many residents commute to nearby Austin or Dallas for work or pleasure while others have adopted rural lifestyles enjoying country living costs much lower than those found elsewhere within Texas City limits

Levelland was founded in 1879 by James Levelland, a cotton broker and merchant. The town developed rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two railroads and its access to water resources. In 1916, Levelland became the county seat of Tarrant County. Over time, the town has undergone numerous changes, including becoming a center for the oil industry in the 1930s and 1940s; a bedroom community during the 1960s and 1970s; and now an agricultural center with a population of approximately 10,000. Since independence from Mexico in 1836, Levelland has been home to several important Native American settlements. The first permanent European-American settlement in what is now Levelland was made by John Crain in 1839 as part of his land purchase from Antonio López de Santa Anna. From this initial effort, many other early settlers came over time. By 1860, there were more than 100 people living in Levelland. The arrival of railways changed everything for Levelland when it became an important transportation hub on the Texas Railroad system. With advances in technology, local businesses began to prosper thanks to increased trade with surrounding counties and states. This growth led to new construction projects such as a library and courthouse which were completed between 1912 and 1916. In addition, new businesses soon sprang up around town based on burgeoning ranching activity that had started around Levelland since it was accessible to shipping routes through nearby Corpus Christi Bayou (now Galveston Bay). A number of these ventures thrived until their closure or acquisition by larger companies during World War II – notably Wacoal Rubber Company – which caused significant economic decline for local residents throughout that decade. During World War II, however, things changed dramatically for Lavelle when oil began flowing abundantly from North Dakota’s Bakken shale field potential reserves were discovered just south of town near present day Midland Regional Airport (LUV). Thanks largely to wartime production quotas established by President Franklin D Roosevelt following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 officials quickly determined that much needed crude oil would be available at very low prices should war ever start again elsewhere within our borders! As luck would have it though no major hostilities erupted after America entered into World War II so all production went back up under tight wartime regulations once again! Consequently tight supplies lead to higher prices for gasoline leading some people To begin using kerosene as their main cooking fuel instead–an unfortunate but common occurrence during those days! With world demand constantly increasing government planners decided that 1/3rd of all U S crude oil output should go towards servicing this large market alone! Businesses like Texaco who exported gasoline products out of Lavelle went through tough times because they could not compete with rising fuel costs! However many small farmers did manage to stay afloat even while high priced imports kept coming into town! These families continue today running small businesses right hereabouts making quality products at modest prices–a reminder that hard work does pay off sometimes 😃
