As part of this set-off process, all but two of the towns in Potter County were named for Confederate general Robert Ewing: Levelland (the other two being Huntsville and Palestine). Levelland's growth during its early years may have been due to its location; just north of Interstate 10 along the riverbank made it easy to trade goods with surrounding counties and cities. However, when Interstate 20 was constructed through neighboring Burnet County in 1977, much traffic between Dallas/Fort Worth and Levelland slowed down or stopped altogether; this led to decreased business for local entrepreneurs who could no longer rely on cross-country trade routes which now lay idle because I-20 improved transportation options within Texas’s larger metropolitan areas."
