In 2010, the city installed new metal detectors at all public entrances to reduce crime incidence at night. This step followed years of research that showed gun lights can help officers make better arrests during investigations.

Levelland is a small town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 714 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by John and Evalyn Levelland and named for their farmstead on the banks of the Trinity River. The name was changed to Levelland in 1886 when it became a municipality. The first post office in Levelland opened in 1885. In 1917, a large gas pipeline was built through Levelland, bringing natural gas to nearby towns such as Irving and Garland. The pipeline has been abandoned now but portions of it still remain visible today as parts of U-Haul truck routes. The town's original three buildings are still standing: the courthouse (1886), Mrs. Aiken's house (1917), and the school (1881). They were all originally built with limestone blocks quarried near Limestone City just north of town on US-69/ abuser Road. According to information from historian Ned Simonds, when local residents lost interest in farming after World War II and stopped building new homes, many old structures were converted into shops or businesses until they all went out of business by 1970; however, only one building - Mrs Aiken’s house - remains standing today as a museum open to the public from 9am to 5pm every day except Mondays because it is used as a church function room during services thereon
