Levelland is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The townsite was organized on March 12, 1879 by John D. Levelland and James Wylie. The name Levelland comes from "Leeds", one of four counties in England which formed the original West Texas Railway Company's line from Wichita Falls to Lubbock on November 15, 1875. In 1915 William H. Hodge established a post office here and named it for his older brother-in-law General George Armstrong Custer who had died three years earlier in an American Civil War battle at Little Big Horn near Fort Worth. This gives some indication as to why Levelland began receiving mail only once every two weeks when it first became a town - somebody must have realized that no general would be visiting this small place! Many people were born or raised here including singer/songwriter Willie Nelson and actor Woody Harrelson (better known as Woody Guthrie). The name Levelland comes from Englishman John Lubbock who settled there in 1849. He named it after his home village of Levenwich, England. In 1875, General James Kountze founded an agricultural and cattle ranch here which became known as Rancho Levelland. By 1886, it had a population of 1,500 people and was considered one of the most important horse ranches in Texas. In 1907, rancher Harry Hays sold his interest in Rancho Levelland to banker Clarence Morgan for $27 million which created what is now Metroplex Incorporated (MOBI) - one of the largest real estate companies in North America with more than $100 billion under management as of 2018 . In early 1934 local citizens organized themselves into a city government and voted to incorporate as Levelland. A year later they repealed their incorporation ordinance when it was determined that they lacked proper approval from within the state government In 1939 due to World War II production at their plant impacted town's economy so Mayor Joplin recommended against annexation by Fort Worth because it would have given them too much competition; but City Council refused to turn down an offer from Fort Worth Mayor Richardson . In 1950 City Council annexed Friendship Heights Annexation because they felt that its proximity would make life more difficult for residents living east of I-10; however this decision also met resistance from many residents who felt annexed territory should only be annexed if there was no other choice From 1951 until 1978 all services were provided by Fort Worth through property taxes collected by both cities combined – although each municipality maintained its own police department and fire department On July 15th 1978 amalgamation between Friendswood and McKinney took place effective November 1st 1978 with Friendswood retaining its full name while McKinney reverted back to its original status as an incorporated town
In 1881, Levelland was founded by John A. Levelland and his wife Lillie. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Red River and its agricultural needs. In 1902, the city of Levelland was incorporated and began growing rapidly. By 1915, it had a population of over 100,000 people. In 1925, a new courthouse was built in Levelland and the city began annexing neighboring communities. In 1930, the Texas Legislature passed the Texas Education Code which transformed education in Texas into a state-run system. This change led to an increase in enrollment at universities statewide and Levelland became one of the leading university towns in the country. In 1941, after World War II ended,Levelland experienced another growth spurt as families returned to the area to rebuild following the war. In 1951,Levelland annexed nearby Cedar Park for city services and business development continued to grow until 1967 when Cedar Park merged with Dallas to form Dallas/Fort Worth Airport (DFW).
