When the American Revolution began, Texas was part of British America. The rebellious colonists in Levelland were motivated by a desire to end British rule and gain their own government. One way they hoped to do this was by wearing firearms on their clothing. In 1775, the first guns were brought into Texas from England, and soon residents of Levelland started wearing them as well. The popularity of gun-toting Texans led to the creation of militias to protect themselves, and eventually a state militia was created in 1836. This organization continued to function until it disbanded in 1876 due to lack of funding. However, the history of firearm t-shirts can be traced back much further than this – starting with just one shirt! In 1840, three men from Levelland traveled downstate to Fort Bend County in order to purchase arms for use against Mexican settlers. The men were John Fousted (right), Franklin Woodruff (left) and Edward Pogue(center). Unfortunately for these gentlemen, hostilities between Mexico and Texas soon broke out after Sam Houston became governor of Texas in 1846. As a result, these three men had no choice but to return home without purchasing any weapons or ammunition - an event which is still celebrated today as “Gun Fustered Day” in Levelland! Although it is not explicitly mentioned in historical records, it is likely that firearms such as rifles and pistols were also worn by Texans during the Civil War because they were needed for fighting alongside American troops. Levelland, Texas is a small town located in Midland County, Texas. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Abilene- TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General James Levelland on land that he acquired from the Comanche Indians in 1836. In 1868, the town was incorporated and renamed for his nephew, General Edward Everett Levelland. The community currently consists of just over one hundred houses and thirty-six businesses. The local economy is based largely on agriculture with some ranching and manufacturing operations also present. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,722 people, 693 households, and 441 families residing in the township. The population density was 126 people per square mile (46/km²). There were 712 housing units at an average density of 50 per square mile (20/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 95% White; 2% African American; 0% Native American; 2% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%ofthe population. There were 693 households out of which 31% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28 percent were non-families. 24
