Levelland is a small town located in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,735 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Levelland is named after James B. Levelland, an early settler. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Levelland in 1872 and began to homestead land. The town was platted on February 14, 1875 by Elisha Hume Greene and Sidney Walthall Waterman Jr., two of the original incorporators of Midland County. On October 25, 1886, it became a city under the name of Dallas with 10,000 residents. In 1923 the Texas Legislature passed Act 7 which designated Levelland as a center for horticulture and land management in Midland County; this changed its name to Dallas-Fort Worth then back to Levelland when City Hall moved from downtown to Highland Park in 1925. In 1990TxDOT created I-10 east of downtownDallas (the old "Sam Houston Tollway"), and routed TXDOT's Sam Houston Tollway through Levelland instead of building exit ramps or expanding I-10 past downtown Dallas (henceforth referred to as "TXDOT's Old Sam Houston Tollway"). This resulted in increased traffic congestion on I-10 westbound near FM 1765 and northbound near US 287 due to people trying to exit TXDOT's Old Sam Houston Tollway into DowntownDallas - this caused numerous closures of local streets including Commerce Street between Elmhurst Road and US 287 during morning rush hour periods throughout the 1990s. In recent years there have been occasional reports that some drivers are trying to use these exits as shortcuts accessing Interstate 20 just south of TXDANDallas without going through I-10 or exiting onto Cook Road eastbound; however this has not yet become a problem significant enough for closure duringrush hours.) The economy base for Levelland is agriculture with about 60% jobs being related directly or indirectly to agriculture; it employs more than 1,200 people directly but also provides services such as animal husbandry and marketing support for agricultural products statewide/nationwide; other major employers are: HCA Healthcare Services Company (which operates several hospitals across Texas), Raytheon Missile Systems Inc., Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., Abbott Laboratories PLC., Kerr McGee & Company LP., Tyson Foods Incorporated (market leader among grocery stores)%. Levelland is a small town located in the county of Travis, Texas. The history of Levelland dates back to the early 1800s when it was part of the Mexican land grant known as Rancho San Marcos. In 1836, General Sam Houston purchased Rancho San Marcos from Antonio López de Santa Anna and moved the ranching operation to what is now Levelland. After annexation by the United States in 1845, the area became part of Williamson County. The first settlers in what is now Levelland arrived in 1837 and named it after their home country, Belgium. They were drawn to this specific location because it had excellent water resources and its location on a mountain made it an ideal site for agriculture. By 1840, some families had erected homes and started farming while others built businesses such as a school and a post office. In 1851, George Waddell organized a group of farmers who wanted to start a cattle drive from Austin to Wichita Falls because they believed that this would provide them with good prices for their animals and help increase production in their farmlands. This event is considered one of the earliest steps in the development of Levelland as an agricultural community. One important milestone during this time was when John Hogg founded Hogg’s Mill which became one of the most important commercial centers in Levelland. This mill produced flour for local grocery stores and also furnished goods for export to Mexico City. Hogg’s Mill also helped develop trade within Levelland by providing materials needed for manufacturing products such as furniture, carpets, clothing, etc., outside of Texas proper. Once American forces invaded Texas during World War II (1939-1945), many residents chose not to fight because they felt that they would not be able to return home after defeat. Many others decided against returning until 1952 when President Dwight D Eisenhower ordered all Texans eastward into Mexico so that our nation could ally with France against Germany! This order led many people back into California or other states so that they could find work once more within our great Union! After years of hard work by citizens and government officials alike, Levelland has seen significant progress over the past few decades including new housing developments, businesses, schools and cultural events throughout the year!
