After reaching present day Lubbock about July 15th Colonel James Kountze' brigade gave chase but were driven back across Cypress Creek by Confederate forces under General Neely's command which then withdrew eastward along Clear Fork River towards Carthage being followed by Lieutenant Colonel Waddell's brigade commanded by Major John Jourdan Atchison who reported seeing "a great body" of Indians leading "a train or columns consisting almost entirely white men." In 1945, local businessman Harry Sibley donated land to build a shopping center on what is now Interstate 10 near Levelland High School. The mall served as a major hub for retailing throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s before becoming vacant and derelict until it was purchased by developers in 2001 and converted into an apartment complex called "The Star".
