The first white settlers in what is now Levelland were two families from Kentucky, who named their farm "Leesburg." They arrived around 1836 and started a cotton plantation that produced cloth for local merchants. In 1847, they bought out their partners and moved to a more permanent location on the same farm. In 1868, John Hogg purchased land in Levelland from the previous owners and began developing it into a farming community with homes, schools, churches, and businesses. He named it after his patron saint - Levelland (England) in honor of his mother's birthplace there. By 1870, Lleesburg had become an important trade center with connections to Houston and San Antonio. Hogg built many of the early buildings still standing today – such as the Lleesburg Hotel - in brick or other traditional local materials. He also developed new techniques for growing crops such as cottonseed oil and cotton ginned yarn which became profitable within a few years. This success led to him purchases additional land around Lleesburg until he had one acre (0.30 hectare) per family by 1886. After World War II ended brought about by the policies of President Franklin D Roosevelt, Levelland's economy slumped due to postwar military spending cuts combined with low demand for locally-produced goods caused by technological advances overseas
