Leon Valley is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. Leon Valley is part of the Amarillo, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in what is now Leon Valley were Mormon pioneers who arrived during the 1840s. They named their community after Saints Leo and Sabrina of Rome, who had been martyred during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Over time, other groups also settled in the area including Germans, Irish Catholics, and Americans from nearby Amarillo. In 1872, a post office was established at Leon Valley and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. At that time, most of Medina County was organized as Nacogdoches County. The town's name honors University of Texas scientist James HargraveLeonard (1837-1901). In 1907, a new bridge was built over the Brazos River near present day Leon Valley to connect the community with Amarillo. This bridge became known as "the Golden Gate Bridge". In 1928, LeonValley High School opened its doors for students grades 9 through 12; it would remain open until 2002 when it closed due to budget cuts by then Medina County Judge Royce Lamberton Jr.. In 1938 another road connecting LeonValley with Amarillo widened and improved making it easier for farmers to transport goods to market; this road remains today called State Highway 59 or SH 59A
Leon Valley was founded in 1853 by Antonio Leon and his wife, Margarita. The first post office in the area was established in 1857. In 1865, the community of Leon Valley became a county seat when it was annexed into Hudspeth County. There were no schools until the late 1800s, so students from other parts of Hudspeth County would come to attend school at Leon Valley. The first hospital in Leon Valley was built in 1892 and served as the town's only hospital for many years. In 1951, a new hospital was built on Texas Highway 361 just outside of town. Today, there is a small shopping center within walking distance of both the original hospital and new library which opened in 2016.
