The Leon Valley Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892. The club has been shooting at different ranges since then, but the first ever sanctioned clay pigeon match was held in 1895. In 1903, the Leon Valley Rifle and Pistol Club organized their first rifle and pistol match. The matches were always open to all shooters of any skill level, regardless of race or color. The club continued to organize tournaments and shoot against other clubs throughout the years. In 1916, a new range opened up in Leon Valley and the club began using it instead of their old range on Deer Creek Road. This new range allowed for much more competition as well as improved shooting conditions which helped increase membership numbers by 50%. However, due to World War I, the Leon Valley Rifle and Pistol Club did not participate in hostilities however they continue to offer educational programs for young shooters through correspondence courses offered through NRA-ILA. In 1938, another new range opened up in Leon Valley and it became known as “The Ranch” because it was used exclusively by hunters who required an open area for hunting with plenty of space to move around within. This new range allowed members from all over the community to come together and compete under one roof without having to travel far away. It also increased competition among members as they now had a common target that they could shoot at close quarters without fear of getting lost or becoming separated from their group while out hunting. In 1955, when Texas Legislature passed House Bill No. 93 which legalized handgun ownership across all states within 30 days after its passage, the Leon Valley Rifle & Pistol Club quickly voted to become one of only two Texas Clubs that would be able to legally own handguns! They also organized a Gun Exhibition where members exhibited their firearms on October 4th which drew many visitors from throughout Texas who came witness this precious event that showcased how firearms can protect us from harm! As a result of these events and others conducted by theLeon Valley Rifle & Pistol Club over time we have come into existence as one of South Texas' premiere rifle & pistol clubs!

The Leon Valley region of Texas was part of the Mexican Empire from 1821 until 1848. In that time period, Mexico ceded much of Central America and parts of South America to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area now comprising Leon Valley became part of the United States in 1845 when Texas was organized as a state. The valley is named for General Antonio Luna, who fought against Mexican troops during the Alamo War. The land in which Leon Valley sits was first inhabited by Native Americans, including the Kiowa and Comanche tribes. After Spanish explorers discovered this region in 1540, they began to settle here. By 1800, there were over 40 thousand Hispanic settlers living in what is now Leon Valley. Many people from Spain brought their cattle and crops to this area because it had an open air environment that suited their needs well. In 1835, General Antonio Luna led a force against Mexican forces at Palo Alto Pass near present-day Austin. This battle marked one of the most important victories for American bullion bandits during the Alamo War. After his victory over Mexicans at Palo Alto Pass, Luna sent troops into this valley looking for new territory to conquer and claimed what is now Leon Valley as his own personal domain within Mexico’s empire. With this new claim came many challenges for American settlers who struggled to make a living off their land while also tryingTo keep up with Mexican military power. However, general difficulty did not prevent Texans from settling in these areas; rather it provided them with fertile ground on which to grow crops and build homes."
Leon Valley was founded by John H. Leon in 1872 as a wagon stage road from Houston to San Antonio. The town was named for John H. Leon, the original owner and builder of the road. It grew rapidly, becoming an important railroad town and then a commercial center with stores, factories, and homes. The population peaked in the early 1920s at about 25,000 people but dwindled over time due to factors such as development in nearby Houston and other cities, politics within the local community, and World War II bombing raids that destroyed many of the town's buildings. In recent years, few people live in Leon Valley because of its limited access to transportation or its expensive housing prices.
