Leon Valley is a town in Presidio County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels–Amarillo metropolitan area. The Leon Valley community was founded by Indians who had been on the Rancho Falfurrias ranch since 1836. In 1870, three brothers from Fort Worth bought the land and started a cattle drive to market. After traveling for months they reached Leon Valley which they named after their father, Leonidas Vallejo. The first post office was established in 1875 and the first store opened in 1880. In 1903, a sawmill was built on what is now Martinez Creek and began production of lumber. By 1907 there were ten businesses in town with a total payroll of $100,000+. The mill closed in 1917 but never lost its importance; it continued to be used as an agricultural center until it went out of business in 1954. The post office closed permanently on October 15, 1957; however mail continued to be delivered through private hands until 1974 when the Leon Valley ZIP code became 83034 was created to reflect this change (the original ZIP code for Leon Valley). The Leon Valley area in Texas was named for General Antonio L. Leon, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was a brigadier general during the American Civil War. The town of Leon Valley was founded in 1873 by settlers from New Mexico and Arizona. In 1876, the community had a population of 10 people and was located about 25 miles east of Austin. The town center was built on an old Indian trail that connected Austin and Fort Worth. The first school in the community was built on what is now called Main Street. In 1907, Leon Valley became one of the first towns in Texas to be incorporated as a city.
