In 1836, Texas became a part of Mexico and most of what is now Leon Valley became part of Villa Clara Province. In 1848, Mexico ceded this territory to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The town of Muleshoe was founded in 1849 by George Crockett and others who were hunters and their families near what is now Hearn Road in central Leon County. After Mexican independence was granted on November 10,1821, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Texans east of San Antonio to leave their homes or face punishment. A group including Crockett rode south from Muleshoe seeking refuge among the Texan Indians at San Jacinto Creek. When they reached Mission San José they found that it had been abandoned by its missionary Obedt Navarro because his followers had deserted him during a skirmish with Mexican forces near Acapulco two weeks earlier. On December 1st Santa Anna issued orders for all remaining Texans to cross over into Mexico or be put into slavery. Without much choice, Crockett and his fellow Texans followed assurances from Indian chiefs that they would not be harmed if they crossed the Rio Grande into Mexico provided they took onlyenough food for themselves and their horses rather than any weapons or gold bullion which would have brought them under Mexican control On Christmas Day 1849 several hundred men camped near present day Hearn Road just south of Medina River where General Sam Houston organized an army under Captain Wm Hogg to march northward against Santa Anna’s forces at Palo Alto Hill on January 6th 1850 successful in driving out Mexican troops from that location with little loss on either side After reaching Monterrey on January 10th Lieutenant Colonel Donelson attempted unsuccessfully to rejoin Houston’s army but upon reaching Socorro he learned that Houston had withdrawn northeastward towards Galveston taking most everything with him including artillery equipment and stores carried across the Brazos River A search party led by Captains John Denton (of HMS Cyane) and David Starr Jordan discoveredHouston’s abandoned army at dawn on January 16th southeast of Fredericksburg about twenty miles west of Galveston . Upon entering Houston’s Army National Guard quarters there were found over one thousand items belonging both to Houston himself including some cannons captured at Palo Alto Hill as well as clothing, arms, saddles etc., many paintings and objets d'art along with library books including four complete sets “Life Of Washington” “Life Of Jefferson” & “Declaration Of Independence” Houston had intended to rendezvous his force with Commodore Perry off Galveston Island but instead decided against it due to deteriorating weather conditions en route having received word through agents back home that Commodore Perry was blockading Vera Cruz Roads thought he might succeed in crossing without losing anything .Having failed completely in his attempt to join forces with PerryHouston returned back upriver via another route past Monterey before finally arriving safe at Corpus Christi Bay on April 7th 1850 having covered more than 350 miles in just nineteen days

But the Texans persevered, and in 1848 they became the first country in America to gain independence from British rule. Texans fought hard for their new nation, but eventually they succumbed to English pressure and ceded their land east of the Rio Grande to Mexico. In1861, after years of campaigning and skirmishes, Texan troops finally drove Mexican forces out of what is now Leon Valley. This victory marked another important milestone in Texas history – it became an American state!
