The original target was made from a log and it could not hold much weight, so it had to be moved around. In 1914, the townspeople built a new target tower that could hold up to 100 pounds. Unfortunately, this structure collapsed soon after being built and the only other option for firing at targets was from a distance. In 1936, the Texas National Guard constructed an 8-foot by 12-foot steel plate training ground on land next to School Lake in Leon Valley. This facility became known as “The Hill” and allowed students from all over Texas to fire at targets during summertime programs. The site also served as an NRA public shooting range until 1979 when it was closed due to vandalism and lack of use. In 1984, Leon Valley High School dedicated its newly renovated gymnasium as the “Glock Target Complex” which housed both indoor and outdoor ranges. This facility has been used increasingly for events such as school shootings or rifle shoots by area groups since then. Today, there are still several locations within the complex where individuals can shoot at various types of targets including handguns and shotguns while enjoying live music or performances every weeknight throughout the year!

A branch line from Washington-on-the-Brazos (now Arlington) served Leon Valley until 1966 when that line was abandoned due to budget cuts necessitated by World War II developments within Johnson County which led to an increase in population density along transportation routes such as Interstate 10 and Ulysses S Grant Parkway. However, local businesses have continued to thrive due to their proximity to I-10, retail stores, restaurants, health care facilities and other major lifestyle amenities available only minutes away or less on highway drives through rural Johnson County.� In 1984, Leon Valley voters passed an ordinance recognizing themselves as an “inner city” designation against what they considered were negative effects associated with development near their center.� This decision allowed for more industrialization within their boundaries which has resulted in increased property values for residents.� Today, much of what once characterized Leon Valley--a mix of traditional farming practices with large tracts of undeveloped land--is now home to high-rise apartments��
