In Leon Valley, Texas, there have been guns in the hands of people for as long as anyone can remember. The first handgun to be owned in this area was a six-shot revolver that belonged to Billy Barnes. It is interesting to note that pistols and rifles were not allowed within two blocks of school until 1886. In 1892, the first post office in Leon Valley opened and customers could buy items such as ammunition from the store. In 1903, a sawmill at the edge of town started producing wood pellets which led to the opening of a gunsmith shop in 1907. This was also when handguns began being made with knuckle guards and other features that enhanced their accuracy. Starting in 1916, shotgun sales became legal so residents could purchase these firearms without having to go through a dealer. In 1919, an armory was built on property now known as Park Road east of town and it served as the headquarters for the Leon Valley County Sheriff’s Department from 1922-1930. During World War II, Leon Valley became home to several military installations including Fort Worth Army Air Field (now portions of Fair Park), Camp Bowie (formerly White Sands Missile Range), and Fort Hood (now Arlington Cemetery). Guns were again allowed within two blocks of school after 1945 but restrictions still applied to ammo sales and ownership of certain types of firearms such as shotguns with stocks less than 26 inches wide or muzzleloading rifles over 28 inches long. As time passed more regulations were put into place but some aspects such as ammunition availability remain unchanged today. For example, it is still illegal for someone under 21 years old to possess a handgun without owning an adult license plates or having an Concealed Weapons License (CWC).

The community has since shrunk again, reaching its current size of 238 people in 2016. The history of Leon Valley begins with Colonel John H.Leon’s arrival to this area during the early 1800s. He founded what is now known as Leon Valley after purchasing land here from the Chisholm Trail settlers who had come through this area overland from Kansas City. In 1881, he built a school and store here and began operations of the new town which would later become known as Leon Valley proper. By 1912, it had grown enough that he decided to move his business and family here permanently and named it after himself – “John Hennessey” became an integral part of local society for many years thereafter. Due to its location close to both Wichita (the original home base for American forces fighting against Mexico during the Pancho Villa raid) and Amarillo (the then-largest city in Texas), Leon Valley saw steady growth throughout its early years thanks to its strategic location; however, due to World War II hostilities it experienced some significant decline until 1952 when a new housing development called “Homes across the Prairie” replaced most of what had been lost in previous fires). However despite this positive outlook overall, progress stalled thereafter as economic conditions deteriorated steadily throughout much of the 1980s until finally hitting bottom following Hurricane Rita which caused extensive damage both inside and outside town limits – all while residents were still struggling just two decades after their initial boom period! However given how long ago these events took place – combined with continued efforts made by local leaders including Mayor Darrell Drinkwater (who continues today as Town Manager) & Councilwoman Kathy Davidson (now Fire Chief), things have begun slowly picking up again recently culminating with last year’s reopening of our historic Main Street Business District which followed 5 years worth OF revitalization work within our walls! In short: Over time there have been numerous changes/ redevelopments taking place within town limits including: * incorporation* annexation* fire suppression/ prevention measures* etc., but always keeping spirit alive & committed towards making life easier for everyday citizens alike!
