The Leon Valley community was founded in 1887 by German immigrants on land donated by James Dolan, a cattle rancher and political leader in the region. The first post office opened in 1895. According to the 2000 census, the population of Leon Valley had fallen to 476 by 2007, but has since increased slightly to 559 residents as of 2010. The main economic activity in Leon Valley is agriculture; some farms produce hay and other crops while others process cotton and other crops for sale or export. In addition to its agricultural activity, Leon Valley also produces dairy products such as cheese and milk; lumber; and manufactured goods such as cars and appliances. There are two schools: one public school serving students from kindergarten through eighth grade; and one private school that serves ninth through 12th grade students.

Leon Valley is a small town located in Hidalgo County, Texas, about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of the city of Edinburg. The Leon Valley community was founded by pioneers in 1881. It began as a ranching community and quickly adapted to the growing population of Edinburg. In 1927, Leon Valley became one of the townships that made up the new county of Hidalgo. The township was abolished in 1932 and its land merged into other township communities within Hidalgo County. Today, Leon Valley is a small rural community with a population of approximately 150 residents. The first Europeans to visit what is now Leon Valley were Spanish traders who traveled through the area during their travels between Santa Fe and Manila in 1821-22. They named the area Nuevo León after King Ferdinand VII of Spain's newly formed kingdom in Mexico City. At that time, most people living along Edinburg's southern border knew nothing about Texas except for rumors or hearsay. A few years later, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna invaded Texas and discovered widespread gold mining activity near San Marcos (now San Antonio). As a result, he decided to establish an empire over much of Mexican America and called himself "the Godlike" due to his conquests there. He ordered all Mexicans living east of the Rio Grande not to cross it without his permission and began building roads throughout Mexico so he could move goods across country faster than anyone else at that time. This caused many Native Americans living along this stretch of roadless country – including most notably the Lenape people – to flee their homes into nearby Pennsylvania or New York State where they could find food and shelter from Spanish soldiers looking for them! In 1881, pioneer John Wesley Hardeman started homesteading land around present-day Leon Valley on what is now known as Hardeman Rancho Seco northwest of today's town center. By 1887, Hardeman had developed two villages: Springdale on Lakeshore Drive southeastward from modern day town center;and Velma on old Slaughter Road northwest from today’s village limits just beyond today’s post office buildings on FM 971 (later US 281). All three villages operated together until 1907 when Springdale disbanded because its own post office did not open until 1925 while Velma continued operations until 1943 when it also disbanded because its own post office opened too late! After leaving Springdale behind him following his purchase in 1906 by Wanda Laughlin Richardshaw & Son ranchers JW & DW Richardshaw (later renamed Richardshawagroup), Lewis Mixon established himself as owner/operatorof Mixon Land Company southwesterly from present day town center operating outposts at Cross Roads (1910), Beaumont Springs (1911), Tomball Lake Loop(1920), Grassy View(1925) & finally current day Hill Country Club off FM 627 adjacent to TX 290 southwesterly from town center making him probably one of if not THE firstranch capitalist operator in Lone Star state - preeminently thru cattle grazing/exportations using valley floor grazing areas FOR ENTRY INTO CONGRESS ON TEN COMMITTEE CITIES LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT FROM 1916 thru 1918 being REPRESENTED BY OWNER OF OWNING AND OPERATING AREA ONLYHill Country Club became operational Nov 1 1923
