Leon Valley is a small town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 553 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1881 by John and Anna Leon. The town is named after their father, Leonidas "Len" Leon. The Len family had originated from what is now Greece. Anna Leon married George Wickersham, who came to the United States in 1847 as a passenger on the USS Alabama. They settled in Kenedy County, Texas and started a farm there. In 1871 they moved to Bastrop County and started a store there. They also operated a ranch until 1908 when they sold it to Jens Jacobsen from Denmark. Jens raised horses and cattle here for many years until he died in 1950. A post office called Leon Valley was established here in 1881, but it was discontinued operation in 1903. The first settler to live here was John Leland who arrived stagecoach from Galveston on November 24 of that year with his wife Rebecca and three children (John Jr., Mary Ellen, & Robert). In 1904- 1905 James Schieffer built an early frame house at 640 Elm Street which still stands today as one of the few remaining buildings from that time period within the town limits of present day Leon Valley! This house served as the nucleus around which development took place throughout much of its short life; however most everything else about this building has long since passed away...except for some feeble evidence left behind by Mr Schieffer himself! It should be noted that not all residents of Leonardville lived close by during those early days – there were people living miles away even back then! But regardless of distance or inconvenience transportation must have been available back then if you wanted goods or services delivered to your doorstep! Interestingly enough Mr Schieffer’s only daughter grew up to adulthood outside of Leonardville…she became involved with musicology eventually founding her own conservatory…..but I digress 🙂 Apostle Hickey came overland from Wichita Falls on July 3rd, 1886 aboard the SS Arkansas bound for Galveston Bayou via San Antonio River trip with 144 passengers including 12 women and 10 children….Hickey disembarked at Pier 21 opposite Bexar County line just east of present day San Jacinto River…and began his two week journey upstream before finally reaching Whatcom County near Guilderland where he met up with other church leaders associated with Planters’ Road Baptist Church who had already chartered several boats downriver towards Corpus ChristiBayou under leadership of Reverend Dr Daniel Webster (later Bishop)….the party continued past Brazoria Street into Corpus Christi where they boarded an ship called “Nigger Queen” for New Orleans..After spending approximately two weeks ashore they sailed again downriver towards Corpus Christi…..Hickey disembarking again at Egremont Point near modern day Midtown Houston prior to being taken prisoner by Ulysses S Grant’s forces along side others including General Sam Houston…..Although never released he did eventually die incarcerated at Fort Union Creek Prison near Fredericksburg VA without ever seeing daylight once more! However his martyrdom would later be commemorated by erection of a large statue dedicated right outside his old prison gates today !! !!
The Leon Valley area in central Texas was first settled by the Comanches in the late 18th century. In the early 19th century, settlers began to arrive in what is now Leon Valley from all over Texas. The first white man to live in the area was John Crain, who came to the region in 1836. By 1840, there were around 100 people living in and around Leon Valley. However, it wasn’t until after Texans won their independence from Mexico that things started to change for the region. In 1846, General Sam Houston arrived in Leon Valley and began working on developing his new state of Texas. This led to a large influx of new settlers into the area and helped spur development within the valley itself. Over time,Leon Valley became known as one of Texas’ most important agricultural hub regions. In addition,the valley also became home to a number of businesses and industries such as oil production and manufacturing. This period saw some major changes for Leon Valley – including its becoming one of only a few areas in Texas where African Americans lived openly during this time period.
