The Leander gun case history began in 1894 when John H. Haggerty, a farmer and entrepreneur, purchased a 104-acre cotton plantation in the town of Leander, Texas. The plantation was located on the banks of the Colorado River, about 25 miles east of Austin. Mr. Haggerty developed the land into a cotton plantation that he named "Haggerty's Cotton Farm". The plantations were very successful and produced high levels of crop production for many years. In 1912, Mr. Haggerty sold his plantation to J.B. King and his family for $1 million dollars. J.B.'s father, John B. King Sr., had also been very successful in developing the cotton plantations in Leander and other parts of Texas during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Leander is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington–Edinburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Leander and Stephen Fenton on November 3, 1881 as a small agricultural community named Prairie View Station. The name derived from prairie view (a site near present-day Midland) and its location near the Brazos River. In 1888, Fenton donated land to the town for a school and courthouse. Fenton died in 1892 and Leander incorporated as a town on December 6, 1892 with sixty-six residents. The first post office opened in 1893. A store was built in 1895 and a hotel in 1897; both were destroyed by fire in 1905. The last post office closed on February 14, 1957. In 1916, the US Army Corps of Engineers constructed an earthen dam across the Brazos River at milepost 9 about northeast of Leander to provide water for farming purposes; this dam remains in use today as Prairie View Dam State Park. According to the 2010 census, Leander has 1 grocery store/ convenience store (Grocery Outlet), 2 restaurants/bars (Bargain Bites & More & Saloon), 3 schools (grades 7-12), 2 churches (First Baptist Church - now known as First Presbyterian Church) - one Portuguese language church started up in 2006 but stopped operations due to lack of congregation members - 2 banks - PCS Credit Union/Applebees restaurant - dry goods store operated by JCPenney until it closed down around 2006 then reopened under new ownership as Hwy 66 Store which continued open until 2011 when it closed again due to financial troubles; there is also a gas station which services all surrounding towns including Midland
