When he left, he donated land to the town so that it could be used as its future courthouse square. Nine years later on July 4th, 1874 – during Texas’ annexation into the United States – Lelanderville became part of Texas with its own government under an Indian Treaty which stated: "No person or tribe shall hereafter come within one mile of this place without written consent from both parties." A post office called Peru had been established in 1868 but ceased operations in 1870 due to lack of customers; however, it reopened in 1886 under Mexican rule as El Paso Post Office before ceasing operations again in 1912 due to American influence over Mexican affairs. Leander was a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States until the late 1800s. It is now part of Midland. The community was named for Leander Gonzales, an original settler in Hudspeth County. The first post office in Leander was established on July 25, 1881. The name of the town may have been inspired by the Venezuelan revolutionary and author Simón Bolívar who announced his intention to move to Texas in 1876 and called Leander "the promised land." On November 15, 1886, Hudspeth County Commissioners created the towns of Midland and Hargrave following a request from citizens of those two towns for assistance with their growing population. When it became apparent that Hudspeth County would not be able to support both Midland and Hargrave at the same time, the commissioners decided to merge them into one municipality on January 1, 1889. At its peak during World War I (1914-18), Leander had a population of 927 people.
