Leander is a city in size, population, and economic activity that lies just east of the Brazos River in Texas. The city was founded in 1836 by Capt. James H. Leander as part of the Mexican land grant known as Rancho San Marcos de Wexford. The name Leander originated from a Native American word meaning "place where the oak tree grows." In 1847, General Antonio López de Santa Anna granted Rancho Las Brisas to Captain James H. Leander and his wife Sally for their lifetime use and sublease to other individuals or families. In 1912, the City of Leander incorporated as an unincorporated town under the jurisdiction of Travis County government. As of 2000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Leander was 27,816 people. The economy of Leander is based on agriculture with some manufacturing and services also present; it has a large ranching industry that includes cattle and hay production as well as mining operations such as coal and gold mining. The city has two sister cities: Ciudad Juárez in Chihuahua state, Mexico City in México state, and Guadalajara in Jalisco state, Mexico; both cities are located about 100 miles (160 km) from Leander proper on opposite sides of the Brazos River near its mouth on this river system which forms part of Texas' eastern border with Mexico

Leander is a town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Leander was founded in 1879 by John H. Elliott as a small ghost town on the edge of Fort Worth during the period of Reconstruction after the American Civil War. Elliott and his family were among the first settlers in Medina County and built their home on what is now Elm Street near present day Midway Road. In 1881, they erected a log cabin known as "The Log Cabin" which still stands today. The community grew rapidly due to its location and economy; in 1890 it had 100 residents and by 1900 it had 350 residents. Trade centered around cattle drives that took place every year from Trinity Lake near Fort Worth to Crowley's Ranch at what is now Midway Road northwest of Leander. By 1906, there were over 900 people living in Leander with businessesprising such as a grocery store, dry goods store, bakery and two churches (the First Methodist Church was added in 1907). In 1911, Leander became one of two towns in Medina County to be annexed into Arlington Heights; this annexation led to an increase in business activity due to increased commuting opportunities within Arlington Heights for workers located in nearby Dallas or Garland. Businesses also attracted new residents who wanted easy access to shopping opportunities available outside their town limits when they moved into Arlington Heights from other parts of Medina County during this time period. In 1916, following World War I hysteria which saw large numbers of veterans parade through cities across America seeking work opportunities post-war%, Leander experienced an influx of refugees from Mexico who had been forced out of their homes during that war; many members of the Elliott family decided to make themselves welcome and establish themselves here permanently thereafter (John H., Jr., arrived just prior to Christmas 1916). However, although most refugees failed to find work or settled down quickly within local housing options due primarily to lack thereof – some did find opportunity working odd jobs throughout downtown Leander - violence broke out between Mexican immigrants living off public assistance while locals protested against what they saw as government handouts being given without proper consideration for those who duly applied for them A social experiment begun by then-Mayor Averill Harriman aimed at providing basic needs like food stamps along with English classes for low income refugees proved successful enough that he doubled funding allocations annually until such time as all programs were fully funded by state government upon annexation into Arlington Heights; resultant growth arrested somewhat once services were discontinued locally because no longer needed due largely theretoldustry growth statewide since 1915 notwithstanding Leander steadied itself again economically following annexation but experienced rapid population growth thereafter leading eventually too high populations rate & infrastructure requirements resulting numerous subdivision/ subdivisions becoming necessary even with limited economic resources putting pronounced strains on already strained municipal functions . Population reached 2k mark only 3 years later prioritizing development initiatives overpopulation resulted devastating consequences including: security issues resulting from increased competition for limited land resources & highway access; quality-of-life aspects deteriorating steadily culminating ultimately leading finally hosting successive waves (2000s thru 2006) OF Katrina damage making landfall here
