Leander is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,853 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1876 by Captain James S. Steele and his family. He named it after Leander, one of the three Spanish subjects who had been taken captive in Mexico City during the Mexican-American War and held as slaves there before being exchanged for American prisoners at San Antonio de Bexar on October 26, 1846. In 1886, Steele's son-in-law John Ladd donated land to the town for a courthouse and schoolhouse. A post office called Leander was established in 1888, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. A fire destroyed most of the buildings in 1907 but not before President Theodore Roosevelt attended a dedication service for the new courthouse following his visit to Fort Worth that year. The building still stands today; it is used as a law library by Tarrant County District Court and also houses some government offices including those for county clerk and sheriff. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Leander had 1,853 residents as of 2010 – down from 2,023 counted in 2000 but up from 902 counted at the 2000 census due to growth within Tarrant County since then (including Cedar Creek). Settled by Texans in 1836, Leander became an agricultural center and manufacturing center after the discovery of oil and natural gas in 1913. The downtown area of Leander has been named a National Historic Landmark since 1978. The first known mention of Leander was as "Laneborough" on November 1, 1836, when Major General James Hogg appointed Major John Laneborough to lead a force against Comanche chief Quanah Parker's band of Native Americans at what is now Pecos River Ranch near present day Lubbock. Leander grew rapidly due to the production of oil and natural gas from nearby wells that were drilled during the early twentieth century. By 1916, over 50 businesses had opened up in town with a total payroll of $1 million dollars! In 1938, Mayor Edward J. Crowley designated portions of downtown as the "Mayor's District." This designation helped bring more business and residents to downtown while also increasing social activities available for residents within walking distance such as dances and receptions at City Hall or State Capitol Building (now home to the Dallas Cowboys). In 1951, Mayor Harry Baugh banned smoking cigarettes on all public property in order to promote healthy living habits among citizens; this led to an increase in business along Main Street which name continued into today’s “Drinking Gourd restaurant” next door to oldest continuously operating storefront east of Interstate 10 – Baugh era building #2 on 3rd & Elm Streets! Businesses along 4th Street between Main and Elm Streets have seen their hours shorten due largely to prohibition but they remain open for lunchtime service only! This vibrant part of town continues its growth phase with plans for restaurants/bars/nightlife located Downtown including One Eyed Joe’s Barbecue Company (formerly called “Bargain Bin BBQ”) just inside 6th St Sq., new movie theater - Regalplex Stadium 12 ( formerly AMC All-Star Cinemas), Phillips 66 Saloon across from Sam Rayburn Coliseum - retail development anchored by Josie’s Cafe soon coming – major project expected completion late 2020 or early 2021 followed by increased night life programming!! Downtown Leander saw its first major event when Plano opens up shop about two miles away via I-10
Leander was founded by James Bowie on November 5, 1836. The town grew rapidly and eventually became the county seat of Anderson County. It was destroyed by a fire in 1847, but re-established itself as a thriving center for industry and commerce. In 1871, the Texas Railroad Company arrived in Leander and began to develop it into a major transportation hub. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak during the late 1800s when it had around 30,000 residents. However, during the early 1900s population growth slowed and eventually declined as new industries came to replace older ones in Leander. Today, the town is mainly known for its agricultural products although some businesses still exist that contribute to local economy.
