The community quickly established itself as a hub for commerce and industry, and over time became an important center for education and culture. Leander is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Wichita Falls metropolitan area. The name "Leander" comes from the Spanish word for "marker." The town was founded in 1876 by landowner and cattleman John Hogg. A post office called Leander was first established in 1877, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1902, millionaire Edwin Ewing purchased much of what is now Tarrant County and organized it into twenty-six counties. In 1903, he donated land to form the current county seat of Leander. The town had its first school on December 8, 1876. The present elementary school opened in 1932 and becamegrades K-4th grade when it became a public school district; grades 5-12 were added in 1965. In 1984, Leander residents voted to secede from Tarrant County and become their own municipality; they were re-incorporated as a municipality on November 1, 1985. On May 3rd of that year, voters approved a referendum to change the name of their municipality to "Leander TX". The new name honored local inhabitance's ties with Wichita Falls (now Fort Worth) which has been their home since 1865 when Lt Col George Armstrong Custer disembarked his horse and wagon there for supplies prior to his famous march through Indian Territory westward towards Mexico City under orders from President Ulysses S Grant

Leander was founded in 1836 by brothers George and Michael Leander. The town became a cattle and sheep town, with a population of around 100 people in the 1830s. In the 1840s, Leander changed hands several times, and by the 1860s it was a small farming community with a few stores and one school. In 1865, when Texas seceded from the United States, Leander became part of the new Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. By 1876, however, most of the town had been wiped out by Comanche raiders. In 1906, local resident John Hildebrandt started an unsuccessful attempt to revive interest in Leander by starting a summer tourist resort on nearby White Sands beach. After World War I ended and America emerged as a global superpower again, Hildebrandt decided to keep the resort open until he died in 1922. By that time, however, tourism had declined significantly in Leander since there were no major resorts along those beaches at that time. In 1955–1956 Senator Richard Meeks sponsored legislation that provided for leasable land speculation within "\the Rio Grande Valley" (later known as Texas), which led to increased activity in Leander during that period. However, this did not lead to any permanent residents moving into or staying in the town; instead development centered around Sears Roebuck & Co.'s Round Rock shopping center east of town and other businesses near Interstate 20 south of town. The Ratschweiler family took control of much of what remained of La Vega after they bought it from Sears Roebuck & Co., forming Ratziger Properties Corporation which developed much of what is now East Austin adjacent to downtown La Vega including portions now known as Ratzinger Park and Ratzinger Boulevard NE). East Austin's current skyline can be traced back to this period when many office buildings were built on high ground east of Interstate 20/US 90 hybridization began - some still standing today! ratziger parks also played an important role during this time due their location just outside city limits making them ideal places for families with children without fear that they would end up living next door- something unheard off before!
