Leander is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,619 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tarrant County and the home of Fort Worth Air National Guard Base and Leander-Fort Worth Regional Airport. Leander was founded in 1881 by pioneers from Missouri who named it after Leander Island in Lake Erie. A post office called "Leander" was established in 1882, and remained open until 1907. The community grew rapidly thanks to its strategic location on Hwy 6 between Wichita Falls and Fort Worth. In 1908, the first local cemetery opened and remains are still used today as a burial ground for residents of the town. In 1912, oil was discovered in Leander by John Denton Slagle Jr., Sr., an American Petroleum Company engineer working for Gulf Oil Corporation's Wichita Falls refinery. By 1915, over 50% of all oil production within Tarrant County had come from leases owned by Gulf Oil Corp.,ushering development of what would become known as the Leander-Fort Worth basin.* An important factor behind this growth were two companies that contributed substantially to its success: Western Electric Power Co., which purchased Slagle's leasehold interest; and Arlington Manufacturing Company (AME), which built an electric power plant on Hwy 6 near present day Midland Boulevard in 1922*.AME also developed areas including Midland Boulevard east of I-10 into one continuous commercial corridor* The airport began operations on November 15, 1927 as McAllister Field when Ardmore Municipal Airport became operational north of downtown Dallas following purchases made by Amarillo Municipal Airport District #2 .McAllister Field served primarily military passengers with no scheduled passenger traffic until 1941 when Convair/Hawker Aircraft began service with Boeing 727-200s . In 1948 4 McDonnell Douglas DC-8s operated out of McAllister Field serving Dallas/Houston Int'l &Amsterdam Air Lines†(*). By 1966 all but one nonstop flight servedDallas/Houston Int'l & Amsterdam Air Lines‡(*).AME closed down their plant south of Midland Boulevard in 1984 due to low demand for electric power *during the late 1970s deregulation era competition increased among airlines led by Southwest Airlines which took over AME's assets By 1990 only 1 McDonnell Douglas DC-9 per week operated outof midtown Houston making it difficult to attract needed maintenance personnel *due to budget cuts MetroAir Cargo Services took over both airports’ runways *. After more than 25 yearsMetroAir Cargo Services sold both airports to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines effective March 9th 2006 *. Today both airports are used mainly for charter flights’

Leander is a small town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Troup in 1849 as a cattle station on the Trinity River. It became a resort town after it opened to visitors in 1892. The name "Leander" comes from Spanish for "the landfall." In 1907, Leander's first post office opened and served the community until 1934. The original courthouse building was destroyed by fire in 1922 and replaced with a newer structure that still stands today. In 1935, Leander became an incorporated city and retains its own governing body today despite having no municipal government since 1938 when it merged with Garland to form Garland-Leander City. A trolley line ran through Leander from 1886 until 1937 when it was supplanted by buses which continued to service the community until 1951 when they were discontinued because of budget cuts at Arlington Heights school District No 1 which had taken over operation of the trolley system. The last bus stop closed on November 17th, 1951 which made Leander one of the few cities in Texas without bus service remaining into the 21st century
Leander was founded in 1836 by Captain James Leander and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Bowen. It became a county seat in 1851 and it is the oldest continuously functioning town in Texas. In 1917, Leander was renamed Arlington after George Washington Carver, one of the most notable civil rights leaders of that era.
