Leander is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, United States, about 23 miles (37 km) south of Austin. The population was 1,755 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Medina County and the only incorporated municipality in Medina County. Knives have been used for hunting and farming throughout history in Leander. One of the earliest knife-making cultures was found in Leander itself with evidence dating back to 9000 BC. Knife-makers were skilled hunters who would use their knives to skin game that had been hunted down and killed by other means including bows and arrows. The first known knife maker in Leander was Jacob Honecker who lived from 1807-1836. From 1838-1842, George Stephenson made knives for local farmers and surveyors working on the Santa Anna Railway project near present day San Marcos, Texas. In 1851 John Pemberton established a blacksmith shop in Leander and began making knives as well as other toolsmithing products such as hammers, chisels, saws, nails, screws and bolts. His shop continued until 1870 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by a lightning strike while he was working inside his workshop. In 1865 Isaac Aycock opened a grocery store on Main Street which became the nucleus of what would become Aycock's Hardware Company which still exists today (established 1907). In 1906 Henry Dillard opened a general store on Second Street which also became the nucleus of what would become Dillard's Department Store (established 1912). These stores were key players in providing goods and services to locals in downtown Leander during its early years including being one of the few businesses open late into the night during Prohibition era (1920-1933). It wasn't until after World War II thatLeander started seeing real economic growth with industry becoming significant components such as truck stop/motel development along Second Street beginning around 1950 followed by numerous small businesses opening up over time such as KFC #1 across from First Baptist Church beginning around 1960 which continues to exist today as an independently owned business with nearly 100 employees.. As more industries came ontotown there were corresponding changes within our community with many residents moving out or leaving altogether because they no longer felt safe or viable living within walking distance of any major commercial center or busy Interstate highway exits without protection against crime or fear of loss thereof either residential or employment opportunities outside those areas became available resulting in an overall decline over time DowntownLeander has shrinking population size although some new construction has taken place primarily related to university students studying nearby campuses providing much needed economic opportunity not only for Leanderers but also surrounding communities .

Leander is a small town in Texas, located in Williamson County. The population was 1,796 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Leander was founded on October 10, 1881 by Capt. George W. Smith and his family as a cowtown about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Austin on the east bank of the Colorado River. By 1886, Leander had become an agricultural center with several large cotton plantations and over 60 smaller farms; it also boasted a store, hotel, and post office. In 1907, when Texas became an independent republic, Leander residents voted to secession from Williamson County and form their own county under the new name of Travis County. Leander experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to Army Air Forces airfields at San Antonio and McGeorge AFB (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord). The war resulted in the construction of more than 100 housing units and businesses in town; many homes were still standing when the war ended two years later. In 1951, Mayor Harry Cavanaugh formed the Leander Civic Association to promote civic improvements such as better public education, health care services for all citizens, more efficient city government operations, development of an outdoor recreation area near Main Street Park*, and increased economic development throughthe erection of local businesses* (*This project never materialized). In 1998–1999 City Council passed ordinances legalizing same-sex marriage in Johnson County* (*Leander did not follow suit). Since 2000 Leander has been home to the annual Texas State Fairgrounds Agricultural Show which features both ruralTexans exhibiting their products* (*and strange critters like giraffes) as well as stately livestock shows.* [*Today only dairy animals are exhibited.]
