The town was named for Dutchman Hendrick Leander, who discovered it in 1836 while surveying the Texas Panhandle. The first settler in what would become Leander was James Hickey. He founded a cabin in 1838 on land that now includes present day Carrolton Road. A year later, he married Sarah Snively and they started farming the land around their cabin. By 1840, they had four children: John Hickey (1841–1911), Anna Snively (1842–1920), Clarissa Hickey (1845–1927) and Hermann Hickey (1847–1925). In 1850, James and Sarah bought another tract of land north of their original holdings from David Epps and began to grow cotton. They also raised cattle and hogs;eventually becoming one of the most successful farmers in this region. In 1876, when General Sherman ordered his forces to move into central Texas during the Civil War due to their fear that Confederate forces would cross over into Kansas Territory occupied by Union troops under Genoa Scott, many Texans transported across country to Fort Worth took up residency in what became Leander thanks to its excellent transportation system - railroads running through both towns made it possible for people not just to escape war but also trade goods with other parts of America without having to go far away or wait long periods of time for delivery

Leander is a town in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It originated as a small settlement on the banks of the Trinity River in 1851. In 1880, it became one of the towns located along the Wichita Road Railway. Leander was incorporated as a city in 1907 and lost its status in 1929 when Wichita Road was rerouted to Interstate 35W. Since then, Leander has been primarily a rural community with some development taking place within the limits of the city. The town got its start when pioneers discovered oil shale near what is now Leander Creek in 1851. The first oil well was drilled by Arthur Fenton and company in 1852 and early production helped spur growth throughout the area. By 1860, over 6 miles (10 km) of pipeline had been built to carry crude oil from nearby Lampasas Basin to market near Fort Worth. In 1880, Leander incorporation took place after residents voted to become part of Wichita Township due to an issue with land grants given out for township formation. At first, much of what is now downtown Leander was simply used as a ranching center for cattle farmers who lived around Buffalo Bayou north of town; however, brick buildings began to be erected between 1881 and 1895 thanks largely to support from citizens such as J P McClendon who provided financial assistance through his local bankrolling business interests west of town on Buffalo Bayou. This type of architecture would later become popular throughout Collin County during this time period due to its affordability and easy accessibility by architects and builders Niles Hite and John Wigglesworth among others who frequented these areas looking for projects or potential clients because they were able to get away with building relatively cheaply without fear that their work would suffer due aesthetic deficiencies or political backlash should it receive less favorable attention from developers or cultural icons like Houston’s Sam Houston Park which sit just outside town lines on several different streets). As late as 1925 there were still few homes available within downtown Leander proper according largely because many residents had taken up residence along abandoned railroad tracks that bisected town boundaries east-west until they were relocated following construction of I-35W back then; however this changed abruptly when Wichita Road became fully open for traffic following completion of Project Redevelopment which saw large numbers (if not all) properties change hands including those within municipal boundaries resulting in an almost complete demolition/ reconstruction/replacement program across most public spaces including but not limited To blocks east-west Of Main Street which involved ripping down entire original buildings dating back over 100 years while leaving only traceable foundations remaining today making it one if not THE most extensive Old Town Preservation Program ever executed by any municipality anywhere! Ironically enough though much later when similar projects occurred simultaneously adjacent To main Street & Red Brick Row whereupon most original residences were razed & replaced also resulted In virtually identical results albeit with slightly more unique architectural features).

It had a population of only thirty-six people when it was founded. By 1840, Leander had a population of two hundred people. The town grew rapidly due to the gold rush that followed the discovery of gold in California in 1848. Over time, Leander became an important center for trading goods with California. In 1868, the town passed through a process known as annexation by Red River County. This made Leander an official county seat and increased its population to six hundred people.
