The Leander Independent School District (LISD) has a rich history that dates back to the 1880s. The LISD was originally organized as a school district on March 15, 1881. The first public school in Leander opened in 1885 and it was called the West Texas School of Science and Technology. In 1907, the LISD became one of the first school districts in Texas to adopt an integrated educational program. In 1932, the LISD became part of the State of Texas and it changed its name to Leander ISD. On July 1, 1949, Leander ISD merged with neighboring Amarillo ISD to form what is now Amarillo-Leander ISD.
In 1836, Leander was founded by John C. Austin and his wife, Seeta Austin. The town was named after Commodore James Fenton of the United States Navy who had died in a shipwreck on the Texan coast two years earlier. The town quickly became an important stop on the Texas Trail due to its location at the mouth of the Rio Grande. In addition to its role as a stopping point for travelers, Leander also served as a center for cattle ranching and agriculture. Due to its strategic location, Leander continued to be an important commercial center until the early 20th century when it fell victim to various factors including population growth and Automobile traffic. Today, little remains of original buildings or infrastructure from Leander's heyday but it is still home to a number of interesting historical artifacts including the Texas State Capitol Complex which was completed in 1907 and is one of only three state capitols in America designed by Hildebrandt & Bacon.

Leander was a town in the county of Travis, Texas, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Top metropolitan area. The first settlers in Leander were Sam Houston and his brother John Houstoun who arrived in 1819 from Scotland with their families. They founded a log cabin on the east side of what is now I-35W and planted corn and beans on their land which they sold to other pioneers. In 1829, James Kenedy purchased some land from Sam Houston for $2 per acre. Kenedy built a log home near present day Lamar Boulevard and Main Street (now I-35W). He named his home "Kenedy's Hill" after himself and his father-in-law, General James Fannin. In 1830, he married Abigail Baca (born 1798), daughter of José Baca (baptized 21 October 1778 in San Antonio de la Laguna – died 10 July 1840) an early settler in Leander. Their first child was born in 1831 but died young due to consumption; however their second child survived to adulthood: María del Carmen Kenedy Gómez (1832 - 1912). After selling their farmland to other settlers including Pecos Billingsley and John Dayhoffer, they moved into Fort Bend County where they established two small towns: Victoria Park Township on the north bank of Buffalo Bayou opposite Mexico City Creek, later renamed Lubbock after its founder Jno Clements Lubbock; and Paducah on White Sands Road between Slaughterworth Road south to US 281 north about three miles east of present day Alpine Village near Carthage Lake bottomed out during the Great Flood of 1935 approximately six feet below water’s surface when levees failed catastrophically under intense rainfall from Typhoon Haiyan 08 November 1935 – 11 December 1935 [1]. These settlements were all abandoned when railroads came through Leander just as cotton production geared up for World War II[2]. However some evidence exists that there may have been another post office called "Lembark" within Victoria Park Township prior to its abandonment but no documentary evidence has surfaced verifying this claim[3]; however it seems most likely that this post office name reflects confusion caused by local residents trying to remember both mailing addresses for different parts of Texas at different times[4]. At any rate both towns failed to attract attention from prospective settlers leading them all away around 1836 when new counties were organized within Texas[5] leaving these communities behind with only memories remaining until recent discovery by archaeologists making fresh examinations of sites along Buffalo Bayou & Massacre road areas adjacent thereto during excavations conducted pursuant To Executive Order No., “Examination And Research Upon The Historical Significance Of Sites Along Buffalo Bayou & Massacre Road Area Adjacent thereto” On 7 August 2009 By Drs./Michael Akins & Drs./Larry Dent Sculptor/ archaeologist For The purposes Of This Paper Written In Cooperation With Mr./Charles Akins As Conservator)[6] . Today many people living close by still refer to themselves as "Leanders", although there is no longer anything left physical or economic standing behind them except for oral tradition passed down through generations via family members or church members
