Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, Texas became part of the Union army and Leander became part of Cameron County. The population of Leander increased rapidly during Reconstruction and declined following World War I due to depressed economy and immigration to new countries. In 1940, when Cameron County was annexed by Dallas County, Leander lost all its local government power and ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality. Today it is a ghost town with only a few remaining structures that are used for tourist purposes
