The first European to visit what is now Leander was Pedro Menendez de Avila on November 3, 1541. A survey by Antonio López de Balboa in 1562 described the area as "xo pueblo grande y bonito" (a large and beautiful village). In 1881, William McKinley's legatee José Cámpora visited Leander while on his way to Mexico City. He stopped in Leander for dinner with local ranchers and learned about the cotton industry there before continuing his journey to Mexico City. A post office called "Leander" was established in 1879, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store built in Leander was a general store built by John Gentry around 1878-1879 just east of downtown. In 1903 a Methodist church and school were also erected near downtown; both are still standing today. In 1905 a small hotel opened on Main Street which later became known as the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino . The community grew rapidly during World War II as many soldiers came through from nearby Dallas to seek work at local munitions plants or other businesses located within walking distance of downtown Leander proper . The post office closed due to competition from mail order services when Internet services became available nationally; however, the old Main Street building remains operational as an art gallery and restaurant named after local hero General George Custer
