Leander is a town in Navarro County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,906 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Nacogdoches Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a farming community in 1879 on the east side of Navarro River near present-day Leander High School. The name was given to the site by General Arthur Brazos after he and his army invaded Mexico during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). When General Brazos returned to America he found that his family had lost all their land in Mexico so he named his new settlement "Brazos" for them. In 1907, Leander's post office opened and remained open until it closed in 1971. Leander started as a small rural community with just a few homes and barns. By 1950 it had grown to over 10 businesses with a population of more than 100 people. Most of these businesses were engaged in agriculture or ranching activities such as cattle, wheat, hogs, corn, soybeans, and chickens. A large number of those businesses have since been closed down including two banks (First National Bank and CitizensBank) which merged into one bank called First American Bank in 1998; four gas stations; three restaurants; two churches; one Masonic Lodge; one doctor’s office; one post office; and one schoolhouse which are now used as apartments or offices. In 1967 when Interstate 20 was built through central Navarro County it changed everything for Leander residents who were forced out of their homes west of I-20 and into what is now Amarillo suburbia on the east side of I-20 known as "the gated community". The only thing left from those days is an old water tower which still stands next to Navarro Creek Road off Hwy 183 north of Amarillo about 2 miles east of town limits
