In 1878 it became a county seat after Wichita County was created from parts of neighboring Johnson County

Leander is a town in Grant County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1881 by John H. Heflin and named for Lieutenant-Governor Leander M. Houston. The population was 597 at the 2000 census. Leander is located on the Arkansas River, about south of downtown Dallas and east of Austin. It is bordered to the north by Plano and to the west by Ardmore. The city of Richardson lies to the south and southwest; Flower Mound lies to the southeast, just outside of Leander's municipal limits. The first settlers in what would become Leander were Confederate veterans who had fought during the American Civil War. They arrived from Georgia in 1881 and platted their land around a militia post built on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River near present-day Main Street and Louisiana Avenue (now I-35W). In 1883, they hired George Prentice as their surveyor, which began what would be an important phase of development for Leander: its growth as a center for cotton production followed by its role as an agricultural center during World War II before becoming a bedroom community after that war ended. In 1865, one year after Texas became independent from Mexico, Captain James Acheson met with Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at Sam Rayburn’s house in Dallas to negotiate terms for annexation of that country into the United States. Santa Anna agreed to cede Texas’ eastern border plus El Paso County (including Leander) to US rule if it would also annex New Mexico Territory (of which Texarkana was then part). As part of this deal, Acheson gave Santa Anna several cannons and some farmland near present-day Spring Branch northeast of Austin while he took possession of some nearby towns including Tomball and Clearwater Beach along with all title thereto excepting only San Marcos proper which went immediately into Mexican hands under Article III Section 8 thereof! After US occupation forces burned down Los Angeles in 1906 following Mexican resistance against US annexation efforts—a event now celebrated annually as Hispanic Heritage Month—Acheson lived out his days until his death within sight but not touchable distance from San Marcos proper where he had situated himself years earlier! This episode has been variously interpreted as evidence that Anglo Americans viewed Mexicans as second class citizens or simply objects worthy only of force majeure situations; however most historians agree that Acheson did not want San Marcos centralized power vested among Texans who might choose instead to resist US rule should it come up again! Prentice continued working on surveys for Heflin & Co., eventually creating a 1/4 mile wide strip running along both banks of LaPorte Creek between present day Pasadena Road (northwest corner) and First Street NW (southwest corner), bisecting what would become East Spring Branch Creek Valley later known as Wheeler Ranch Field Preserve State Park today when established in 1901 Census District #5! By 1886 many other farmers had moved into what would become Leander following cotton crops; school districts were organized within localities starting with Clearwater Beach School District #1 formed in 1888 when voters there elected Superintendent Daniel Jarrell!). On July 16th 1890 Transfer Act No 8055 passed Congress setting aside 640 acres northwest sectional boundary line between Polk County & Richland County Now included Butler Hills subdivisions!!! said 640 acres included much valuable grazing land adjoining Willow Run Plantation east across Highways 183& 20 en route to Garland!! Today this area forms much part contiguous portions Of Grant Co., TX mostly inside City Limits Of Garland!! In 1896 7th Ward Councilman Fenton Dickson proposed naming streets after local Governors such as Houston etc....... Streets such As Waco Lumber Rd., Travis St., Waller Rd., Bowie St….. Dickson also suggested renaming streets like Ector Dr., Bushnell Ave., Gonzales Blvd…. Namesake Streets Were Proved Necessary In 1902 When Revenue Commission Changed Name Of Enterprise To Enterprise Company And Incorporated What Is Now revoke Corporation Name To Enterprise Company Incorporating Heflin Farms Incorporated Date Unknown But Likely Before 1900
Leander was founded in 1836 by James H. Leander, a landowner and businessman. The town became an important center for cattle ranching and cotton farming in the early nineteenth century. In 1886, Leander was renamed Fort Worth after Texas Governor Charles Goodyear.
