Leander, Texas is a small town located in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and is the county seat of Webb County. The name Leander was given to it by General James Fenton during his battle with Mexican forces in 1836. At first, the people thought that Fenton had named it for his flagship ship (the USS Leander). However, Union forces discovered this deception and burned down Fenton's ship while he was on board. Consequently, the townspeople decided to rename their community after General Fenton's ship rather than give up their original name of "Leander". The town began popsulating itself in earnest around 1830 when Captain John Dutton founded a cotton gin here. One of Leander’s most important residents during its early days was David Hogg who served as justice of peace from 1834 until 1840. He also helped found the Chicago and Texas Railroad which connected Austin and Fort Worth. In 1853, Hogg donated land to build what would become Dutchtown Cemetery which still stands today. During World War II Japanese American Internment took place here; many people lost their lives in concentration camps located nearby such as Topaz Lake or Camp O'Donnell. After the war ended, many businesses closed down including the cotton gin and post office but new ones started up shortly afterwards such as Burger King and Dairy Queen on Main Street near I-10 (now Old Highway 290). The courthouse was destroyed by a fire in 1984 but replaced with a new structure just south of current day US Highway 287 (Old Highway 26) which serves as both municipal center for Leander and its annexed towns of Eastlake Village (to the east), Waco Heights (to the west), Spanish Oaks (northwest), North Richland Hills (southwest) and West Deerfield (east). Much like other small towns throughout America experiences during this time period – changes came about due to mainly economic reasons rather than military events or natural disasters – so too did Leander change over time becoming more diversely populated: African Americans made significant contributions through entrepreneurship within several businesses such as menial labor at local retail establishments; Latinos immigrated into various areas seeking work opportunities; veteran servicemen/veterans found employment teaching high school students English classes; families adopted children from countries such as Mexico or Central America – all while maintaining close social ties with one another despite geographical distance; churches continued functioning despite scarce resources often resulting in attendance numbers dipping below 50% year-round due to longer distances between services locations etc.– all creating an ever-lasting sense of community cohesion even amidst difficult times

Leander, Texas was founded in 1867 by Captain James Dallas and his wife, Sarah. The first store in the town was opened on Main Street by J.D. White. In 1872, Leander became the county seat of Robertson County when it was organized from parts of Travis and Williamson counties. The current courthouse was built in 1907 and is one of the oldest remaining buildings in Leander. In 1905, a number of small businesses amalgamated to form the First National Bank of Leander. That same year, the city of Leander was founded with a population of just over 100 people. It soon became an important banking center for Robertson County and Texas because it had a high-volume printing press and other printing capabilities. In 1910, Leander annexed the neighboring town of Winkler to its northward growth as part of its efforts to become an important financial center for southern Robertson County. The Panic of 1893 devastated cattle prices which led to many out-of-state investors moving into Robertson County during that time period looking for opportunities to invest their money or buy land hereabouts. By 1897, nearly all business establishments had closed down due to low cattle prices and lack of customers; however, some new industry began to develop such as lumbering and farming ( later becoming major economic drivers). Businesses revived beginning around 1912 when feed stocks improved following world war I's dramatic increase in grain prices throughout America Robertson County experienced significant population growth during World War II as servicemen from surrounding states flooded into our county looking for work on various fronts including shipbuilding and Aircraft production at Wichita State University’s Plant Construction Battalion No 2 (PBU2) where I worked from 1942 until 1945 These years were also very productive for agriculture with increased acreage being plowed under ( later becoming major cash crops) thanks largely to irrigation systems being constructed across central Robertson County during this time period
