The community was platted in 1890 by John Pemberton and James White under the name "Eagle's Nest". The post office was established in 1892, and the town name was changed to Leander in 1907 after millionaire oilman Alexander Leander bought land here. A plant manufacturer named Mayo Manufacturing Company opened its factory in 1929; it closed in 1957 but left behind an extensive legacy including several colleges and universities (including Texas A&M University). In 1966, Monsanto merged with Dow Chemical Corporation to form Monsanto/Dow Chemical Corporation which still exists today as one of America's largest chemical companies. Leander had two schools when it first came into existence: a school for white children operated from 1889 until 1951 by Mrs. Hite and her husband Dr. Jens Hite (the father of current Mayor Karen Hite) and an all black school operated from 1951 until 1969 by Mrs. Gentry until she died that year; both schools were eventually integrated into nearby Prairie View A&M University when that institution became totally African American within six years! Since then, there has been only one elementary school – La Salle Preparatory School – open to students grades K-8 since 1978 while Prairie View A&M University offers secondary education through its Colleges of Education & Humanitiesdivision offering classes from PreKindergarten through 12th grade along with many special programs such as music theory or ballet!

Leander is a town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1881 and named for Leander Bayard Dodge, an American Revolutionary War hero. The original town site was located on the east bank of the Trinity River. A post office was established at Leander in 1881, and mail service continued until 1984. The first store opened in 1886. In 1889, a school was built and later renamed Springdale High School; it closed in 2002 after being converted into apartments. In 1907, an oil well were drilled near Leander and production began shortly thereafter; the town quickly became known as "the oil capital of Texas". The well produced over 10 million barrels of oil over its lifetime. After World War II ended, Leander declined as businesses moved away or closed down; however, some new businesses have began to open since then including a medical center and grocery store. In 2000-2001 there was a renewal of residential development with many new homes being constructed along East Business Street which had been used as a commercial strip mall before that time
