Leander is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County. Leander was founded in 1849 and named after Captain John Lubbock, who had surveyed the area. The town of Leander was platted on November 15, 1849 by J.B. White and Wm. Balfour with a land grant from Governor James Fannin for £1000 cash plus $20 per acre to be paid in three installments over six years (the first installment would have been paid in January 1850). The town formed on February 21, 1850 when two men walked into town to purchase supplies and found that everyone had left for dinner and not yet realized they were there! The name "Leander" is thought to come from an early settler's definition of "a strong stream flowing through a healthy country." In 1860, Leander had a population of 350 people and four businesses; one store, two hotels and one blacksmith shop; but by 1870 it had shrunk to just fifty-six people with only two businesses; one grocery store and one hotel. In 1895 the post office opened with mail service from Houston which helped increase business as residents began traveling more distances for their goods than ever before. By 1900 Leander consisted of just fourteen residents; four stores (two selling general merchandise including groceries), three hotels and one schoolhouse serving grades K-12th grade students from rural areas throughout the surrounding counties viz: Jim Wells (Hidalgo), Webb (Fulton), Ector (Lubbock) all within commuting distance to larger cities like Austin or Dallas etc... citizens also started frorrng oil production which increased travel times between Dallas / Austin Airport & Leander making it easier for residents to get their goods & services delivered here

However, it continued to be called "Leander" until 1902 when it was renamed Reno County in honor of George Waco, the founder of Wichita County
