During World War II, Leander became an important military base due to its location on the Texas-Mexico border. This allowed for the importation of large numbers of weapons which were used in both the war effort and during afterward peace time period. In 1960, Leander merged with another small town in central Texas called Richardson to form what is now known as Dallas-Richardson County School District No. 1 (DRC1). The merger created a new municipality which had more than 2,000 residents at its peak; however enrollment has declined since that time due largely to seperate school systems within Dallas County (which includes much more densely populated parts of Dallas) combined with rising housing prices in Richardson County outside Dallas proper limits

Leander, Texas is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,068 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Bryan metropolitan statistical area. The town was named for Leander Stephens (1820-1901), an American founder of Standard Oil Company who came to Texas in 1847 and founded what would become Leander. In 1896, Stephens donated land to the city of Amarillo for use as a cemetery. The city has since annexed much of Stephens' property into its limits. The townsite that makes up today's Leander was first settled by people from Illinois in 1871 and grew quickly due to irrigation projects authorized by President Ulysses S. Grant during his term as president in 1865-1869. A post office called "Leander" was established in 1872, but it was renamed "Amarillo" on February 17, 1899 after then-Governor George Wickersham (D). The name stuck and the town became known as Amarillo until 1907 when it changed again to "Leander" after Stephens' grandson, Hernando Alfred Leonard Leander Jr., who had married Jennie Ferguson on October 15 that year at First Baptist Church in Amarillo. Work on creating a local water supply began in earnest in 1886 when Jeptha Haskell made an offer to buy 20 acres (8 ha) near present day Main Street for $10 per acre ($2/ha). Haskell agreed to share profits with others involved until he had built his own system capable of providing all the water needs of the community – something that still occurs today with some modifications! It was named for Leander Cruz de la Vega, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then settled in the area. In 1881, Alpheus Coleman built a sawmill and cotton gin here which became one of Texas' first large cotton plantations. The mill continued to operate until it burned down in 1921. In 1925, the town of Leander (originally spelled "Lenhall") merged with Medina County to form new county government. A post office operated in Leander from 1881 to 1923; it was renamed Medina County Post Office in 1925. Leander is located at (29°14′06″N 95°58′24″W). The terrain is rolling farmland with some scattered ranching and small towns situated on valleys that run east-west through the community. According to the 2010 census, its total population was 1,711 people; 513 of those lived in what is now downtown Leander and 498 lived outside of it within Medina County limits
