Brown of the Texas Rangers was shooting at Indian combatants when he discovered a group of them firing arrows from behind a hill. He ordered his men to fire back and they did so successfully hitting several of the Indians. The practice continued and by 1849, bullets were being fired from rifles into close range for sport. The first rifle cartridges used in combat were made of lead, but eventually transitioned to steel rounds in 1865 because it was more durable. By 1886, all bullets had been replaced with metallic cartridges that created little or no noise as they traveled through an ammunition magazine. This allowed soldiers and civilians to fire without fear of being heard or targeted by enemy snipers or sharpshooters. In 1922, Waco-based Midland Airlines (now KLM) established its operations in Leander with headquarters on Main Street and five terminals located around town: one on the north side ofMain Street near Center Avenue and two on the east side of Main Street opposite State Highway 114. Midland Airways ceased operations in 1984 but Lefty O'Doul's restaurant remains open as a museum and tourist attraction today called "Midland Cafe". It has also been said that Stonewall Jackson stayed at Midland's original headquarters while preparations were made for his invasion of Texas during the Mexican–American War; however this claim is spurious and may have been fabricated by local boosters looking to boost business interests in their township during post-war reconstruction periods following World War II boom times. A more recent source suggests that Jackson actually spent time at Belle Vista Hotel located about three miles east of midtown on Loop 1604 just outside what is now known as Midland University District within Southwestern Research Campus zone - adjacent to Morningside Drive corridor - although hotel records reflect no such visit from JACKSON during Mexican American War era

Jesse Fenton and his wife Jane Houston as a post office on a small ranch near what is now Uptown Leander. Fenton had come to Texas from Missouri to become a surveyor for the new county of Travis in 1872. He chose the name "Leander" after Larkins, Scotland, where he and Jane had been married two years earlier. In 1876, Fenton donated land to build a school and store in honor of his late wife's family connections with Texas settlers and throughout history with Mexican Americans who had helped populate Texas. The store became known as "The Ranch Store." In 1886, Fenton sold all his holdings in Leander to J C Hogg, an early settler from Odessa who developed into one of the most successful ranchers in American history. Over time Hogg built up what became known as The Gables Ranch which included 4 main buildings: Athouse (now used as a hotel), Store, barn/grazing area and home for several hundred horses and cattle that were later divided among several heirs until finally passing down through inheritance to their children also involved in agriculture; Harry Addison (1913-2006), son of Harry Addison Sr., purchased much or all of it from HCG descendants upon his father's death in 2006; current owner Joel Addison (born 1959) has managed it since 2005 when it reverted back to its original purpose - providing housing and farmland for livestock while also holding title to it through grazing rights under lease with TPWD). Leander, Texas was founded by Leander and Anna K. Polk in 1836. The town was named after Anna's father, Leander K. Polk, who had been a colonel in the Mexican War. The first settlers were fighting for independence from Mexico and were based in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. They arrived in what is now Leander in 1836 and began to build their homes and businesses. In 1840, the town voted to secede from Mexico and became an independent republic under President Antonio López de Santa Anna. The polks continued to live here until 1848 when they moved to nearby Austin.
