Leander was founded in 1881 by Danish immigrants Ole and Amalie Rasmussen as a tiny farmstead on the edge of what is now the city of Arlington. The Rasmussens prospered farming their land until they sold it in 1915 to Harry Hines, who platted and developed what became Arlington. In 1865, when Texas became a U.S. state, Leander's first settler was Jens Christensen from Aarhus i Danmark (now Aarhus). In 1880, Danish immigrants Ole Rasmussen and Amalie Rasmussen bought 160 acres (70 hectares) of land along Elm Creek north of Arlington for $2 per acre ($/km²). They named their new community "Leander" after Olle Rasmussen's father Leif Larsen had homesteaded there in 1859. The Rasmussens prospered farming their land until they sold it in 1915 to Harry Hines, who platted and developed what became Arlington. In 1916 Hines donated 4 square miles (10 km²) of his land to the town for use as an open-air market with sidewalks on both sides that ran between two churches—the First Baptist Church (later renamed Trinity Episcopal Church) on Elm Creek east side and Christ Church west side—and also included one block south of First Baptist Church that served as the town center or business district between 1914 and 1925 when it was replaced by post office buildings on Elm Street near Interstate highways 35W and 287E before becoming known as "Hines Park". This piece of property remains most notable for its large brick Market Hall which still stands today serving as office space for local businesses including law firms since 1974; marketing agencies such as Google Earth; but also home to several restaurants including Cafe Roma which has been open since 1984; Live Oakgrove Golf Course which opened in 1997; Flour Mill & Bakery Museum which opened in 2000; Heritage Farms Park with tennis courts & playground on 2 acres (8 km²); a small lake surrounded by homes built during World War II known locally simply as "Lake Hine"; an old cotton gin located northwest corner Lake Hine next to cemetery just off I-35W about 3 minutes away from downtown Leander mom&pop cars will drive down Main Street all day long &amp"It’s no wonder that modern day residents refer to themselves affectionately as “Old timers” due largely to this legacy! Today Leander boasts some beautiful architecture dating back more than 125 years while its downtown core hosts many businesses - both traditional retail outlets like banks and department stores along Elm Street while newer mixed-use developments have cropped up around Main Street such as CenturyLink Field South plaza adjacent to Bankers Life Fieldhouse across from Interstate 10/287E etc., making it one busy place once again!

Hilliard[5], Edwin Senter,[6], and Orrin Mclntyre.[7] In 1865, David Gentry leased from trustees of Eastern Railroad an area along the tracks extending to what is now Lancaster about three miles east of present day Leander; this land became known as Gentry Landing which later became part of Vernon County.[8][9][10] In 1870–71 cattle were driven south to Brazos River Valley past present day San Angelo where they were auctioned off at public auctions held every other week until 1903 when they were moved to Wichita Falls due to fever epidemics then moving back upriver each year until finally being brought downriver again in 1907 during one of world's largest floods; after over two months confinement at Wichita Falls they were sold at public sale on October 15th for $640 per head plus freight which raised $14,080 for public works projects such as filling potholes and building bridges across Brazos River valley not to mention providing food for 400 families who lost their homes that year during flooding also creating new businesses such as stores, hotels etc.; all this money went into repairing damage done by flood including levee breaches but also contributing towards maintainable infrastructure needed by future generations still extant today like US 75 & FM 545 near present day Gainesville which forms much of LEANDER’S core commercial district today;[11][12][13][14] In 1906 George Hudgins opened his Hudgins Lumber Company on what is now US 75 north of present day Gainesville with lumber from Fort Worth Cutters milling operations started two years earlier before being completed in 1908 becoming the largest single business venture ever initiated in Vernon County with a fleet size greater than any other company including oil production facilities early 20th century Oilfield Village newly constructed southtown/west side of town center incorporating various industries associated with TX Tech University beginning regular bus service between original downtown building & new annex located southside near old coke plant until demolition following switchover from diesel buses to electric buses began circa 1975 modernized Comprehensive Plan adopted ordinance resulted In re-zoning Town Center property northeast corner streets containing more than 100 business enterprises Specialty zoning enacted resulting in designation of LEANDER “Texas Technology Hub” since designation date 1978
